What if your thoughts aren’t really the problem?
What if there’s something underneath them?
We often assume our thoughts simply appear.
“I’m not good enough.”
“I’ve messed everything up.”
“They’re going to be disappointed in me.”
“I should have done more.”
But thoughts are often influenced by the beliefs we hold about ourselves.
And those beliefs can have been shaped by things we’ve experienced, heard or learned much earlier in life.
If somewhere along the way you learned to believe:
“I’m not enough.”
Then a mistake might not just feel like a mistake.
It might feel like proof that you’re not enough.
If you learned:
“I have to keep everyone happy.”
Then saying no might create guilt.
If you learned:
“I have to get everything right.”
Then making a mistake might trigger shame.
And suddenly, your thoughts, feelings and behaviours can start following the same familiar pattern.
You overthink.
You apologise when you haven’t done anything wrong.
You people-please.
You avoid difficult conversations.
You criticise yourself.
You work harder and harder trying to prove something to yourself.
But here’s the important bit:
A thought can feel true without being a fact.
And a belief you’ve carried for years doesn’t have to define you forever.
Sometimes change begins by becoming curious about the belief underneath the thought.
Instead of asking:
“Why do I think like this?”
Try asking:
“What would I have to believe about myself for this thought to make sense?”
That question can open a very different door.
Because when you understand the belief, you can begin to question it.
And when you question it, you create the possibility of choosing something different.
***Reflection for today***
What is one thought you regularly have about yourself?
And what might that thought be telling you about what you believe?
You don’t have to believe every thought your mind gives you.
You are allowed to believe differently.
