Equal Lives

Equal Lives We are a user-led disability rights organisation based in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Equal Lives is a user-led disability rights charity based in Norfolk and Suffolk that has been established for over 20 years. We exist to support people of any age who face disabling barriers and we are dedicated to making their voices heard.

We are a user led organisation (ULO), meaning we are led by people who access care and support services themselves - with a strong majority of our board

identifying as disabled.

We believe in supporting people to empower themselves to live independent lives. We do this through valuable services including Information & Advice, Advocacy, Shopmobility, and Campaigning.

Our mission for disabled people’s independence is why we work to the Social Model of Disability. Developed by disabled people, this model is a progressive way of viewing the world and says that individuals are limited by barriers within society and not by their own impairments or differences. Our aim is to breakdown these disabling barriers and work with people to achieve the life they choose.

The government’s Access to Work scheme is under formal scrutiny, and Access to Work Collective are asking for you to share your experiences of using Access to Work.

They are especially interested in experiences from 2022 onwards, particularly during the period when demand and waiting times have sharply increased. Responses are anonymised and will help inform evidence submitted to Parliament.

The Public Accounts Committee is investigating the scheme following serious concerns about long delays, growing backlogs, rising costs and the impact on disabled people and employers. The National Audit Office has already examined how the scheme is operating. MPs will now question senior DWP officials about what is going wrong and what is being done to fix it.

Access to Work Collective want to hear from:

• Disabled people and people with health conditions who have applied for or received support

• People still waiting for decisions or renewals

• Employers who have relied on Access to Work to recruit or retain staff

• Support providers affected by delays or payment issues

We want to understand the real impact.
How long are people waiting?
Has support been reduced?
What has this meant for jobs, income, businesses, health or housing?

The deadline to complete the survey is just four days away, on 20th February, and you can respond by following this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf91xCBHDaQ1nutMXvpZrdM6J6Yv57z_5AgV0mRuH3P2qhc1w/viewform

Disability Rights UK believe it’s time for a new, stronger, more proactive law to sit alongside the existing Equality Act 2010 - the Accessibility Act. And we agree!

The Equality Act is a useful foundation to work from, as it does offer legal protections against discrimination. However, the Equality Act is limited, as enforcement relies on individuals raising legal cases, which tend to be costly and complex. Many Disabled people do not have the capacity for this process.

Disability Rights UK have launched a survey and want to hear from you about your experiences of accessibility and your opinions on the proposed Accessibility Act.

Our latest blog, 'Should blind women be allowed axes?' explores disability and choice. To read it, follow this link: https://www.equallives.org.uk/post/should-blind-women-be-allowed-axes

[Image description: The words, ‘Should blind women be allowed axes?’ are in bold black text, overlaying a semi-transparent white coloured strip positioned centrally. This strip sits over a photo of the lower face and upper body of a Viking-looking woman, with ferns attached to her around her collar, like jewellery and small tattoos on her arms. She’s holding an axe with leather binding diagonally across her chest like she knows how to use it. From the bottom of the image, a bluey purple ombre effect becomes less opaque near the top of the image.]

Our latest guest blog explores the experiences of one of our chronically ill members and the concept of disability as an in-between space, a liminal space. To read it, click this link: https://www.equallives.org.uk/post/the-in-between

[Image description: Overlaying a black background, the words, 'the in-between' sit centrally in thin, white text. A mostly transparent, white outline of the Orion constellation sits centrally behind the text, and Equal Lives' logo is in the bottom right.]
