🚨 SEVERE LEG SWELLING AFTER LIPOSUCTION — WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN?

This client came to Midland Contour Clinic experiencing significant swelling through her lower legs following liposuction.

After liposuction, the body experiences trauma and inflammation, and lymphatic vessels can be temporarily disrupted. This can make it harder for the lymphatic system to move excess fluid efficiently.

💧 So why can the swelling travel into the legs?

Gravity can cause excess fluid to settle in the lower limbs, particularly when mobility is reduced during early recovery. Post-surgical inflammation, fluid shifts and compression garments that are poorly fitted or restrictive can also contribute.

This is why appropriate post-operative lymphatic drainage and aftercare can be such an important part of recovery. MLD can support lymphatic flow, help manage swelling and improve comfort while the body heals.

⚠️ Severe swelling should never simply be assumed to be “normal.” New, worsening or one-sided leg swelling—especially with pain, redness, warmth, chest pain or shortness of breath—needs urgent medical assessment to rule out complications such as a blood clot.

These swollen feet and lower legs are a common concern after cosmetic surgery, but they should never be ignored.

After a tummy tuck and BBL, your body has been through significant trauma. During surgery, many lymphatic vessels are temporarily disrupted, making it harder for lymphatic fluid to drain efficiently. Gravity then causes this excess fluid to travel down into the feet and lower legs, leading to noticeable swelling.

Other factors that can contribute include:
✨ Reduced mobility during the first few weeks after surgery.
✨ Inflammation as part of the normal healing process.
✨ Compression garments that are too tight around the thighs or knees, restricting lymphatic return.
✨ Fluid shifts following surgery and the IV fluids given during the procedure.

💜 Post-operative lymphatic drainage helps encourage the movement of excess fluid, supports the lymphatic system while it heals, reduces discomfort, and may help accelerate recovery when carried out at the appropriate stage of healing.

⚠️ Important: While swelling is common, it should always be assessed alongside other symptoms.
