One of the frustrating things about Misophonia is that the reaction can feel incredibly specific, while the reason behind it isn't always obvious.

Researchers are still working to understand exactly why particular sounds can trigger such strong responses in some people.

So if you've ever sat there thinking:

๐—ช๐—›๐—ฌ does this sound affect me like this?!

Your brain might genuinely have no useful answer.

๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐—ฆ๐—ข๐—จ๐—ก๐—— HASNโ€™T EVEN HAPPENED YET.

So why has your brain already reacted?

Youโ€™re sitting there.

Someone reaches for a packet.

You hear the packaging move.

Maybe the packet hasnโ€™t even opened yet.

But something inside you has already gone:

โ€œOh noโ€ฆโ€

That can feel bizarre.

Because technically, there wasn't a trigger sound yet.

But your brain doesn't necessarily have to wait for the complete sound before it starts making predictions about what is coming next.

And this is where things get really interesting.

Your brain is constantly using information from the world around you to anticipate what is likely to happen next.

A movement.

A familiar sequence.

A particular object.

A sound beginning in a familiar way.

All of these can provide information about what might come next.

Recent research into misophonia is beginning to look more closely at how individual acoustic features of sounds relate to discomfort, with researchers finding that different people can have very different sound features that drive their responses.

So perhaps sometimes the experience isn't simply:

SOUND โ†’ REACTION

There may be much more happening in between.

The brain is constantly interpreting incoming information and making sense of what it expects to happen next.

And that raises a fascinating question:

Could changing what the brain predicts change what happens when the sound actually arrives?

That's an area of misophonia research and understanding that I find particularly interesting.

Because sometimes the most interesting part of a trigger isn't just the sound itself.

It may be what the brain has already decided that sound means โ€” before you've even heard the whole thing.

And that's worth thinking about.

๐Ÿ‘‚ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—บโ€ฆ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ป๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜† ๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐˜?One of the strangest things about...

One of the strangest things about Misophonia is how a particular sound can seem to become impossible to ignore.

It might be the crumpling of a plastic bag.

The hum of a swimming pool pump.

Birds singing outside.

A ticking clock.

A washing machine.

A particular keyboard key.

Or even something as tiny as a pen clicking.

And somehow, amongst all the other sounds happening around you, your brain finds that one.

It can feel as though the sound has suddenly been turned up.

But here's the interesting part

The sound itself hasn't necessarily become louder.

Your brain may have become highly tuned to detecting it.

Once something has become important to the brain, attention can be drawn towards it incredibly quickly.

And that creates a frustrating paradox:

The harder you try NOT to hear it, the more you seem to notice it.

You can be watching television.

Having a conversation.

Trying to concentrate on something completely different.

And thenโ€ฆ

there it is.

That tiny sound.

Instantly detected.

Instantly noticed.

And once you've noticed it, it's incredibly difficult to put it back into the background.

It isn't necessarily that you're hearing more.

Your brain may simply have become exceptionally good at finding that particular sound. ๐Ÿง

And sometimes, that particular sound is one nobody else would ever think twice about.

Think about chewing.

Swallowing.

Sniffing.

Breathing.

Tapping.

For many people with Misophonia, some of these sounds can be relatively unproblematic when they make them themselves.

Then someone else makes the sound

โ€ฆand suddenly it feels completely different.

But here's where it gets really interesting.

Some people are triggered by their own swallowing.

Some are triggered by their own breathing.

Some react to sounds they produce themselves.

And some don't. Or some are sometimes...not all the time?

So we can't simply say:

โ€œYour brain doesn't react to sounds you make yourself.โ€

Because that's not everyone's experience.

But for the people who notice this difference

When we produce a movement ourselves, our brain isn't just receiving the resulting sound.

It has information about the movement that is about to happen.

It knows, to some degree:

โ€œI'm about to move.โ€

โ€œI'm about to swallow.โ€

โ€œI'm about to make that sound.โ€

That prediction may influence how the resulting sensory information is experienced.

So perhaps the brain isn't simply asking:

โ€œWhat sound did I just hear?โ€

It may also be processing:

โ€œWhere did that come from?โ€

โ€œDid I produce it?โ€

โ€œWas it expected?โ€

โ€œWhat was happening around it?โ€

And that could help explain why the exact same type of sound doesn't necessarily produce the exact same response every time.

Not because Misophonia is imaginary.

Not because someone is choosing their reaction.

But because the brain doesn't process sound in isolation.

And maybe that's the bit that's worth thinking aboutโ€ฆ

Think about thisโ€ฆ

Someone makes a trigger sound.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Your reaction hits.

Thenโ€ฆ

Silence.

The sound has stopped.

But your brain goes:

โ€œIs it going to happen again?โ€

And suddenly

๐Ÿ‘‚ Youโ€™re listening.

Youโ€™re watching.

Youโ€™re checking.

Youโ€™re waiting.

You hear them move.

You hear their breathing.

You hear a tiny noise from across the room.

And your brain is already asking:

โ€œWas that it?โ€

This can create a really interesting loop:

Your brain is trying to protect you.

But the more it learns:

โ€œI need to watch out for that sound.โ€

โ€ฆthe more important that sound can become.

So sometimes, the work isn't simply about what happens when the trigger occurs.

โ€œIs it coming?โ€

Because if your brain is constantly standing guard

With Misophonia, you can become incredibly precise at detecting certain sounds.

Not just โ€œsomeone is eating.โ€

But the tiny details within it.

The rhythm.

The pauses.

The change in volume.

The particular way the sound begins.

The tiny variations that most people would never consciously notice.

Your attention can become extraordinarily tuned to a very specific type of auditory information.

And that's one reason a trigger can feel so ๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—–๐—œ๐—™๐—œ๐—–.

It isn't necessarily every chewing sound.

It might be one person's chewing.

It's identifying a very particular ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ป within that sound.

The MisoGo Programme is the Misophonia programme I created to help people improve their relationship with Misophonia and Misokinesia.

As I am based in the UK and often work across timezones and needed to support a younger audience too....I launched the MisoGo Online Programme.

This client has been doing the MisoGo Programme Self-Study and has observed that she was able to remain in the same room as her Brother was present and that her body is feeling less tense- resulting in less anxiety ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

"It's going great! I was sat in the kitchen whilst my brother was eating lunch today!"

"I'm definitely a lot less tense! Like I used to notice my tongue was at the top of my mouth all the time but it's stopped doing that now!"

The course is available at www.mindblocks.co.uk

With a 100% refund available up to 7 days if the programme is followed correctly and you change your decision. I believe in it that much.

Also, happy to offer a free initial consultation call to discuss the programme and requirements if you have any questions or wish to find out anything about it which isn't explained on my shiny, new website at www.mindblocks.co.uk
