Understanding Misophonia: Current Research, Symptoms and Treatment Approaches
What Is Misophonia?
Misophonia, which literally means "hatred of sound," is a condition in which specific sounds trigger intense emotional, physiological, and behavioural reactions. Common trigger sounds include chewing, breathing, sniffing, lip smacking, pen clicking, keyboard tapping, and repetitive movements associated with sound production.
Individuals with misophonia do not simply dislike these sounds. Rather, exposure to trigger sounds can provoke an immediate fight-or-flight response characterised by irritation, anger, anxiety, disgust, panic, or a strong urge to escape the situation. Let's face it....living with Misophonia is living in exposure therapy for many.
Although awareness of Misophonia has increased significantly in recent years, it remains an area of active scientific research.
Common Symptoms
People with Misophonia may experience:
- Intense emotional reactions to specific sounds
- Heightened awareness of trigger sounds
- Physical tension or increased heart rate
- Difficulty concentrating when exposed to triggers
- Avoidance of social situations involving trigger sounds
- Relationship difficulties due to sound sensitivities
- Anticipatory anxiety regarding future exposure to triggers
The severity of symptoms varies considerably between individuals.
Is Misophonia a Hearing Problem?
Current evidence suggests that it is not primarily caused by problems with hearing sensitivity or hearing loss.
Research indicates that the reaction may involve altered processing within networks of the brain responsible for attention, emotion, salience detection, and autonomic arousal. Neuroimaging studies have identified differences in activity within regions such as the anterior insular cortex when individuals are exposed to trigger sounds. (This is my absolute area of focus!)
This may help explain why relatively quiet sounds can provoke such strong reactions.
Misophonia and Misokinesia
Many people with Misophonia also report distress when observing repetitive visual movements. This phenomenon is known as misokinesia. Miso's BFF!
Examples may include:
- Leg shaking
- Finger tapping
- Pen clicking movements
- Repetitive fidgeting
Research suggests that Misophonia and Misokinesia frequently co-occur, although they are considered distinct experiences.(Yet not always exclusive).
What Causes Misophonia?
At present, no single cause has been identified.
Researchers have proposed that Misophonia may involve a combination of:
- Neurobiological factors
- Learning and conditioning processes
- Attention mechanisms
- Emotional processing differences
- Individual life experiences
- Trauma
Further research is required before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
Treatment Approaches
There is currently no universally accepted cure for Misophonia. However, a range of interventions are being explored.
These include:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT currently has some of the strongest research support. It aims to help individuals modify unhelpful thought patterns, reduce avoidance behaviours, and develop coping strategies.
Sound Management Strategies
Many individuals benefit from:
- Noise-cancelling headphones
- Background sound enrichment
- White noise/Brown noise etc
- Environmental modifications
Emotional Regulation Techniques
Approaches that help regulate stress and autonomic arousal may assist some individuals in reducing the intensity of trigger reactions. I think this is key π
Emerging Therapeutic Approaches
Researchers and clinicians continue to investigate a variety of approaches, including mindfulness-based interventions, attention-training techniques, and trauma-informed methods. Evidence for many newer approaches remains limited and further research is needed. But we can only do what we can do with the π§ we have.
Living with Misophonia...
While Misophonia can have a significant impact on quality of life, many individuals learn to manage symptoms successfully through education, self-awareness, environmental adjustments, and appropriate therapeutic support.
Increasing public awareness and ongoing scientific research continue to improve understanding of this complex condition.

Although the exact mechanisms remain under investigation, growing research supports the view that Misophonia involves differences in how certain sounds are processed within the brain's emotional and attentional systems.
