Prof Simon Johnson and long-standing LAM patient Helen Sabin have contributed to a wonderful BBC news item about the National LAM Centre in Nottingham. It’s generally an excellent piece which will help raise awareness of our very rare lung disease.

However, newly diagnosed LAM patients should ignore the sensationalist headline - even in 2008 a LAM prognosis was never as bad as Helen’s initial doctor suggested, and since then, as Simon explains and Helen’s story shows, we now have a successful treatment which has radically improved the outlook for patients.

Helen Sabin wants to support other patients, reduce fear and improve understanding.

Spare a thought for Kat Johnstone and her friend, Mora McGovern as they take on the Glen Tanar 25km Trail Run from 9am on 25th July to raise money for LAM Action. Glen Tanar is a gruelling course along some of the most scenic and challenging routes in Scotland.

Kat was diagnosed with LAM in early 2025, shortly after the birth of her twin girls. To support her fundraising go to: justgiving.com/page/kat-johnstone-1

Good luck to Kat Johnstone (left) from Aberdeen, and her good friend Mora McGovern who will be taking part in the Glen Tanar 25KM Trail Run to support LAM Action on July 25th. As the name suggests this involves running a rugged 25 kilometre trail through the spectacular Cairngorms National Park in Royal Deeside.

Over to you Kat: “I was diagnosed with LAM after the birth of my cheeky twin girls in February 2025. I am in the early stages of the disease and still undergoing regular checks to monitor progression. Overall, I am doing well but I have been thrown into a new bubble that is struggling for support and funding of a rare disease. Any donation would be hugely appreciated. Thank you for the support for myself and all the other women who are currently living with this disease.”

Good luck Kat and Mora and thank you for supporting LAM Action – best wishes from us all!

Good luck to Pippa Byrne from Ramsay who is taking on the Isle of Man 'Parish Walk' with the aim of completing the 85 mile route around the island in 23 hours. She is raising money for LAM Action because her friend, Anna Kerruish - a local farmer - has LAM. Pippa has taken on the challenge before, but last time she ended up in hospital. She hopes she has trained enough to avoid that this year.
As well as meeting up with Anna en route, Pippa will be supported by her partner, Simon and sister, Emma and her two sons, Daniel and Dylan.
Spare a thought for them all in the early hours of Sunday morning and if you would like to add to Pippa's fundraising total go to: https://www.justgiving.com/page/pippa-clare-1
