A lay sangha affiliated to Zenways, London

We sit within the Zendo Kyodan school, of the Mino branch, of the Inzan lineage, of the Rinzai tradition of Zen Buddhism

We draw our inspiration from the works of two main Zen Masters, Hakuin Zenji and Bankei, as well as many others, working with Zazen (sitting meditation), Dozen (doing/active meditation) and Koan practices (contemplation on stories, di

alogues or questions). Our head abbot, Shinzan Miyamae Roshi, lives in Bankei's former hermitage, Gyokuryuji, near Seki, Japan. David Mokuren Slater, who leads the group is a trainee Junior Zen Teacher under the tutelage of Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi, Shinzan Roshi's successor and the first British person to become a Zen Master within the Rinzai tradition. Regular meetings held on Monday evenings, 7:15-9pm, at Om Studios, Greyhound St, Nottingham NG1 2DP

Whilst proud of the heritage behind us Nottingham Zen Society is not about trying to recreate a Zen monastery replete with overly formal adherence to dogma and practices. Instead, we hope to bring practical awareness of Buddhas teachings and that of the great Zen masters, bringing relief to our suffering and pointing in the direction of Kensho, a direct experience of our true nature. Chanting and ritual are used as another means to penetrate this understanding through mindful practice but not at the expense of remaining true to the experience by being too rigid. There is no requirement to wear black although it is requested muted colours without large designs/logos are worn in order to minimise distractions.

Shinzan Roshi in front of Gyokuryuji in 2017.

After having his kensho confirmed by Itsugai Roshi, Shinzan moved to a tiny temple deep in the mountains called Enjoji. He continued his Zen study at nearby Kokutaiji monastery with a very good teacher called Inaba Shinden. This was a time of clarifying his dream.

At this time in his life, Shinzan Rōshi realised he did not want to run a [mainstream] training school for funeral priests. He had discovered Gyokuryuji, former hermitage of the great Zen master Bankei, while out on takuhatsu (alms round). The little temple had no source of income and had thus been long abandoned. The buildings that remained were on the point of collapse. Shinzan Rōshi moved in and began saving what was left. As he restored the hermitage, he dreamed of restoring the focus of the Zen school.

He put up a sign at the gate announcing, “Training place for both young and old people to come and realise awakening.” This was much more in line with his dream.

[Day 11 of our 49-day sesshin retreat in honour of Shinzan Roshi 1935-2021]

Shinzan Rōshi was very keen to welcome hikikomori and other outcasts to try to help them find a way back into society.
For those of us training in the temple, we had to learn to work with these people and still maintain the schedule. Things could get quite wild! Of all the people who came to the temple, the most controversial were former members of a Japanese cult called Aum Shinrikyo. In 1995 Aum Shinrikyo released poison gas Sarin on the Tokyo subway killing 12 people and injuring many more.

Of the group, one of the most feared and reviled was the second most senior member, Kazuaki Okazaki. After the subway incident Shinzan Rōshi became involved in Okuzaki’s rehabilitation. He engaged him on the level of his meditation practice by asking about his personal experiences. Surprisingly there was a breakthrough. This brainwashed and very fixed character started to soften and open, seeing beyond his indoctrination and moving towards the middle way.

Shinzan Rōshi visited Okazaki regularly in prison. Gradually the prisoner started to recognise his awful crime. He began to try to do his very best to make amends, making apologies to surviving family members. He became a student of Shinzan Rōshi and studied Zen with him. A gifted artist, his Zen-inspired drawings are featured in our book Rough Waking (Zenways Press 2019).

Okazaki eventually received the death sentence and under Japanese law he was only permitted to receive visits from family members. So Shinzan Rōshi took steps towards adopting this hated man so that he could continue his visits. You can imagine the ripples this caused in every aspect of Shinzan’s life. His wife divorced him and many people in the Zen establishment shook their heads. Shinzan Rōshi continued.

From our teacher Daizan Roshi:

We’ve just heard that our teacher Zen master Shinzan died last week on the 27th. At the moment we don’t have any more information. As we find out more, I’ll of course let you know.

We’re commemorating his life and expressing our gratitude through a 49-day online sesshin (Zen retreat) starting from this evening, 8pm 4th June. With these events it’s a priority to keep the continuity going, even if it’s just one person sitting at anyone time. We’re going to be keeping all the regular Zenways events going during this period. So it will only work if we do it together.

It’ll take us a few days to refine the system. You’re very welcome to join with us for all or any of the following schedule. For this period the Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat 8pm home zazen meetings will be subsumed into the retreat schedule.

Zazen in hour blocks – 25 minutes sitting, 5 minutes walking, 25 minutes sitting, 5 minutes walking.

Zen master Shinzan was a rare and fearless teacher. It’s an extraordinary thing to be touched by such a life. He was fiercely proud of his Zenways family and in that context more than once said to me, “I can die at peace now.” As we sit together during this time our job is to continue to bring his incredible spirit into presence and manifestation. He is not gone. He can be with us more than ever. You can help this to happen.

Wishing you all the very best and thank you for your practice.

We can think about our lives in two contrasting ways: in terms of ‘being’ and in terms of ‘doing’. In our lineage of Zen there are two great Zen masters, each emphasizing one of these two approaches: Hakuin (1686-1768) who taught a journey from point A through the process of practice to poin...
