The Sport Welfare Officer Network first launched in summer 2023.

The Network now has more than 60 officers based in Active Partnerships supporting safeguarding and welfare at their local sports club level.

The Ann Craft Trust is on the oversight group for this network. Sport Welfare Officers have a commitment to help create safer cultures through the establishment of local networks, educational opportunities, and through creating resources and toolkits.

Since October 2024 Sport Welfare Officers across England have supported over 5,000 clubs, helping them to create safe and positive environments for participants.

This week Active Partnerships launched Sport Welfare in Action, a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of welfare and safeguarding in grassroots sport and physical activity.

The campaign brings together Active Partnerships, clubs, National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and Sport England to champion the work of the Sport Welfare Officer (SWO) Network.

We are running our Safeguarding Adults at Risk Level 3 Training for Managers and Designated Safeguarding Leads throughout 2026.

We've just uploaded 12 new courses, running from July through to December.

This online course will explore the roles and responsibilities of managers in terms of safeguarding adults at risk.

We’ll look at the key changes within safeguarding as part of the Care Act. You’ll be encouraged to identify where the challenges are, and to seek solutions towards implementation in practice.

We’ll cover best practice, the expectations of regulators, and the lessons we learned from our safeguarding adults reviews.

This course is for people with a safeguarding responsibility, or looking to develop for a safeguarding role. It’s also suitable for people looking for personal professional development.

We'll be running this course twice a month. Some sessions will take place over the course of a single day. Others will be split across two days. All courses will cover the same topics, whether they take place across one day or two.

These courses tend to fill up fast, so book now to avoid disappointment!

It's Mental Health Awareness Week.

There is a strong link between mental health and safeguarding. Self care empowers you to safeguard others. Plus, if you are suffering from poor mental health, you might be more susceptible to further harms, including hoarding and financial exploitation.

On 8 June, we're hosting an official online launch event for Safeguarding Adults Week 2026.

Safeguarding Adults Week 2026 will take place 16 - 22 November.

In this official launch event for the campaign, we will share the creative assets for the campaign and explore this year's key theme:

Every Voice. Every Choice.

Key areas of focus will be co-production and Making Safeguarding Personal. We’ll explore how a collaborative approach aligns closely with key principals of the Care Act 2014, such as empowerment and prevention.

It’s all about giving people a voice, and making it their choice as to what happens, and what makes them feel safe.

We'll share some ideas for how you can get involved in this campaign, and you'll have the opportunity to share your own ideas for themes, workshops, and other resources.

Laura Thorpe chats with Dr Claire Bates from Choice Support Supported Loving.

"Support Loving is a national network that promotes best practice with the goal of getting people with learning disabilities and autistic people the support they need to enjoy the same s*xual and romantic freedoms as everyone else.

"It was started by Dr Claire Bates, whose research found that relationships were important to people, but that they often relied on staff support to begin and maintain these relationships.

"Founded by Claire in 2017, Supported Loving has been supporting the rights of people with learning disabilities and autistic people and working to identify the barriers they face in having intimate relationships.

"Through research, training, creating resources and accessible information on s*x and relationships, Supported Loving wants to make love a reality for everyone."
