Nottinghamshire Deaf Society Supporting deaf, HOH, and deafblind people across Nottinghamshire with advocacy, employment and welfare rights support, community groups and events.

We also offer BSL and Deaf Awareness courses for organisations and businesses. The purpose of Nottinghamshire Deaf Society is to empower deaf people so that their lives are enriched. We do this in the following ways:

high standards for ourselves

Over the next 5 years, we want to work with people of all ages, with different types of deafness. We want to increase the number of partnerships we have with other organisations and groups. We will be known as a provider of services and involved and engaged with the wider deaf
community. Our 2 year strategy (2021-22) focuses on strengthening and consolidating our current services and activities while preparing to develop and expand through partnerships. Our principal activities include:

A range of services tailored to meet the specific needs of Deaf British Sign Language users – enabling people to access information directly in their first language of BSL. BSL interpreting services, enabling over 2,000 BSL users and a wide variety of service providers to communicate effectively. A range of high quality training including certified British Sign Language (BSL) training from our team of qualified Tutors in BSL levels 1, 2 and 3; Introduction To BSL courses; bespoke Deaf Awareness training; Lip Reading courses. Welfare Rights Advice service for deaf and hard of hearing people living in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. The aim of this service is to ensure that deaf people are getting the right benefits, the right level of benefits and support they are entitled to. Volunteer Befriending service, matching volunteer befrienders with deaf people in the local community who are at risk of social isolation, particularly as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. A community space for local deaf groups and other organisations to meet in, offer services and to socialise in.

Come to our BSL Taster session on Saturday 12th September, 10am-11.30am

The sessions will take place at Nottingham Central Library.

These sessions are perfect for anyone who wants to try out British Sign Language and see what it's like.

Simon Miller will be your tutor and teach you for 1.5 hours. It will be fun and informal.

The taster session costs £15, and you will receive a £15 discount off the course fees if you book onto the full BSL Level 1 course.

We will explore the topic of romance scam this month.

Join us for an open discussion about romance scams where people can share their experiences, understand how these scams work and discover practical ways to protect themselves.

A Money Management session from Step Forward will take place at both hubs:

South Notts Hub on 11th September, 10.30am-1.30pm at the NDS hall.

North Notts Hub on 25th September, 10.30am-1.30pm at Mansfield Central Library.

UPDATE

Two BSL Level 1 has been postponed. The new dates are:

Monday 28th September, 6pm-8pm
Tuesday 29th September, 10am-12pm
Tuesday 29th September, 6pm-8pm (for parents of deaf children only)

Due to demand for Level 2 course, we have added a new date which starts on Monday 4th November, 6pm-9pm for 30 weeks.
