A special visit with a big impact 💙

Local poet Liz Carney-Marsh returned to Nottingham Children’s Hospital to donate copies of her new football poetry book, "Back of the Net", which has been published in time for the World Cup. ⚽📚

Having been a patient herself as a child, Liz spent time reading with patients and staff, sharing her love of poetry and ITV were there to capture it all.

Visits like this bring smiles, inspiration and a reminder to our Children's hospital patients that they’re not alone.

💙 50 years of NHS service, thank you, Algis
For half a century, Algis has been helping keep our hospitals running behind the scenes as a Boiler Operator, a role, he’s proud of, even if it often goes unseen.
Starting in the NHS at just 16, Algis has dedicated 50 years of service, including 41 years at Nottingham City Hospital, now NUH. And retirement? Not just yet: “I’ve still got the steam in me.”
This week, Algis was celebrated with a special 50‑year recognition award at our NUH Long Service Awards.
Thank you, Algis, for your dedication, hard work and kindness – we’re incredibly grateful.

Thanks to a £38,000 donation from Nottingham Hospitals Charity, every family with a baby receiving neonatal care at Nottingham University Hospitals can now access a breast pump at their baby's bedside.

For mum Amanda Harvey-Rae, whose twins Arya and Sophie were born at 32 weeks and are receiving care at City Hospital's neonatal unit, the pumps have made a huge difference. Being able to express milk right beside her babies means she can stay close to them while providing vital nourishment.

A huge thank you to everyone whose donations helped make this possible.

In Episode 3 of Don't Say The Q Word, we meet Nottingham Children’s Hospital patient Ella Davey and her mum, Emma.

At just 16 years old and preparing for her Year 10 GCSE mock exams, Ella woke up one morning looking "white as a ghost." What she thought would be a routine blood test quickly turned into something far more serious, and within hours she was admitted to hospital.

Soon, Ella found herself on Ward E39, the teenage cancer ward, beginning a journey that neither she nor her family could ever have imagined.

Watch Ella and Emma share their story in this powerful episode. 💙

At Nottingham University Hospitals, our trainee Biomedical Scientists are doing more than processing samples behind the scenes, they're helping young patients build confidence and curiosity through special laboratory tours at Queen’s Medical Centre.

As part of Harvey’s Lab Tours, a UK-wide initiative, children can see what happens to their blood samples after a test, explore our laboratories, and learn how Biomedical Scientists help diagnose and monitor health conditions every day.

One young patient who recently enjoyed the experience was eight-year-old George. George suffered a stroke on New Year’s Day, turning what should have been a normal start to the year into a challenging journey of hospital visits, tests and appointments for him and his family.

With a keen interest in science, George was fascinated to follow his samples through the different laboratories and discover how test results are produced. The tour helped turn an unfamiliar hospital experience into an exciting learning opportunity for both George and his family.

On Biomedical Science Day, we're proud to celebrate the vital work of Biomedical Scientists and the positive difference they make, not only through diagnosis and treatment, but also by helping patients better understand their healthcare journey.

Last week we held our annual long service awards afternoon tea to celebrate some of our volunteers who have reached a voluntary services milestone this year.

Sponsored by Nottingham Hospitals Charity, the volunteers were welcomed to the afternoon tea held at the QMC to collect their long service award, presented by Chief Nurse, Tracy Pilcher.

This year included two 30-year awards for volunteers Denise Macleod and Thomas Turner, and an amazing 40-year award for volunteer Richard Mee.

Thank you to all of our 750 volunteers who generously give up their free time to help improve our services and support our patients, staff and visitors

Joining NUH in 2005 ahead of the trust’s merger, Amunpreet experienced first-hand the challenges and opportunities that came with bringing different cultures, teams and services together.

Now, as NUH marks its 20th anniversary, she reflects on just how far things have come with real progress in teamwork, staff inclusion, wellbeing and diversity.

She also highlights the important role of staff networks, including those supporting minority ethnic colleagues, in helping create a more inclusive and supportive workplace where everyone can thrive.

Returning to NUH in 2023, Amunpreet described the experience simply as
“This organisation really does feel like home,” she said.

“My motivation comes from serving the local community and seeing the impact of the work we do. That makes it incredibly meaningful.”
