360 Life – Relationships and Social Connection
⠀
When you think about improving your health and wellbeing, what comes to mind? Nutrition, exercise, sleep?
⠀
If I said that making time for genuine human connection is just as important as going to the gym or eating a salad... would you believe me? (And no, a WhatsApp message doesn’t count!)
⠀
In terms of how we prioritise our time, social connection is often seen as a luxury, and something to do if there’s time, once everything else is dealt with. I get it. There is always far too much to do!
⠀
But I wanted to give a gentle nudge here as to why it’s so important for your health, not just mentally, but physiologically too.
⠀
Physically, our bodies respond by producing more oxytocin (the ‘feel good’ hormone), reducing stress hormones, and activating our rest-and-recovery response. This gives our bodies the opportunity to get on with all the important maintenance work behind the scenes, strengthening our immune system, supporting brain health, repairing wear and tear, building muscle, keeping us healthy and resilient.
⠀
Mentally, have you ever noticed how much lighter you feel after a good chat with a friend? The weight of the world suddenly doesn’t feel quite so heavy. Dare I say that sometimes, you can even laugh about something that completely enraged you a few days earlier?!
⠀
A problem shared really can be (or at least feel like) a problem halved. Sharing doesn’t necessarily change the problem, or make it go away, but it can help us deal with it differently.
⠀
Ultimately, we’re social creatures. The eye contact, body language, tone of voice, facial expressions all matter hugely. And mostly, the subconscious knowing that we’re not alone.
⠀
This is why relationships and social connection form an important part of my 360 Life and 360 Life At Work programmes. Their impact on our health and ability to navigate life is enormous, yet often hugely underestimated.
⠀
This week, make time for one meaningful connection with someone you love, or trust, or simply someone who leaves you feeling lighter, brighter and uplifted. 💛
