Rather than affiliating to one brand, I have taken time to find effective, evidenced based products from a variety of brands giving you plenty of formulation and texture options.

And, because this is a medical aesthetics clinic, we can also discuss where skincare reaches its limits. If a treatment could genuinely add something, I’ll explain your options. If skincare is all you need, I’ll tell you that too.

Your face doesn’t suddenly change at 40.

Facial ageing is a gradual process, and it happens at every level, not just the skin.

Over time, collagen and elastin decline, facial fat changes in volume and distribution, muscles continue to influence facial expression and our facial skeleton gradually remodels. Together these changes affect the contours, shadows, lines and folds we see on the surface. This is why I don’t believe in putting filler whenever you see a line.

Good aesthetic treatment starts by understanding what has actually changed and why. For one person, that might mean improving skin quality. For another, reducing muscle movement, stimulating collagen or restoring some lost structural support.

I’ve completed a level 7 in aesthetic medicine, but what does that actually mean?

There is significant variation in aesthetics medicine qualifications, particularly around how they are regulated and who is allowed to undertake them. But being a doctor doesn’t automatically make someone an expert in aesthetic medicine either. I believe the strongest foundation combines medical training with rigorous, aesthetic specific education and supervised clinical experience.

This post explains wheat level 7 actually means, what to look for when choosing a practitioner and the questions I think every patient should feel comfortable asking.

Because qualifications don’t just affect the letters that come after your name, they change how you are assessed, your treatment plan and ability to manage if things don’t go to plan.

When the sun sets but the damage remains.

As we come towards the end of summer, you might start noticing changes in your skin that weren’t apparent before.

Sun damage isn’t just sunburn. UVA penetrates more deeply into the skin and contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin over time. This can lead to changes in texture, pigmentation and firmness. UVB causes sunburn and can damage DNA. Both contribute to skin cancer.

If you’ve already started noticing signs of sun damage, it’s not too late to start looking after your skin. Using daily broad spectrum SPF will prevent further damage whilst targeted skin care can help restore your skin barrier.

Pigmentation, redness, fine lines, texture and loss of firmness are different concerns, so there isn’t a single treatment for sun damage. A consultation allows assessment of your skin and helps decide the best treatment plan.

Not every aesthetic treatment needs to wait until Autumn.

A common misconception I hear is that aesthetic treatments need to be delayed during summer. Whilst this is true for treatments that increase your vulnerability to sun exposure or pigmentation, many are suitable in the summer. The outcome is also dependent on the timing and aftercare.

Many treatments, including Profhilo, polynucleotides, Skinvive and dermal filler can be suitable throughout the year. Injectable treatments offer a great option to hydrate skin, improve pigment and texture, reduce fine lines and restore volume.

Going away this summer?

Preparing your skin for a holiday doesn’t have to mean packing more products or booking treatment at the last minute.

A simplifying your skin care regime can reduce the stress placed on the skin barrier with the bonus of saving space in your luggage.

Your sunglasses protect more than just your eyes.

We often wear sunglasses to make bright summer days more comfortable, but they can also help to protect the delicate skin around the eyes.

The skin in this area is thinner than elsewhere on the face, making it more vulnerable to UV damage and consequently is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing.
