📖 Introducing a brand new educational series…

The Oldham Lymphatic Clinic Educational Atlas

Because of social media adverts showing flat tummies and everyone thinking Manual Lymphatic Drainage is about that, I’ve decided to make an educational atlas for for MLD.

Volume 6 – Conditions & Manual Lymphatic Drainage

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Can Manual Lymphatic Drainage help my condition?”

The answer isn’t always straightforward, which is why I’ve created this new educational series.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be exploring a range of conditions where Dr Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) may play a supportive role as part of a wider treatment and management plan.

We’ll be covering topics such as:

💙 Lymphoedema

💜 Lipoedema

🏥 Post-surgical swelling

🦵 Chronic swelling

🌸 Endometriosis, adenomyosis & pelvic congestion

🌿 Fibromyalgia

👃 Sinus congestion & head and neck swelling

…and much more.

My aim is to provide clear, evidence-informed information that helps you better understand your body and what MLD can—and cannot—do.

🌿 It’s important to remember: MLD is not a cure and it doesn’t replace medical treatment. It is a gentle, specialised therapy that may help support the body’s natural lymphatic function and improve comfort for some people, depending on their individual circumstances.

If there’s a condition you’d like me to cover in a future page of the atlas, let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear your suggestions. 💙

🤔 Did you know that your blood capillaries and lymphatic capillaries have completely different jobs?

🩸 Blood Capillaries vs Initial Lymphatic Capillaries

Although they sit side by side within our tissues, blood capillaries and initial lymphatic capillaries have very different jobs.

🩸 Blood capillaries deliver oxygen and nutrients to your body’s cells and remove carbon dioxide and some waste products. They are part of a closed circulatory system, with blood constantly flowing around the body.

💧 Initial lymphatic capillaries are the starting point of the lymphatic system. They collect excess interstitial fluid, proteins and other substances left behind in the tissues that cannot all return directly to the bloodstream.

Unlike blood capillaries, initial lymphatic capillaries are blind-ended vessels with specialised overlapping “oak-leaf” endothelial cells that form tiny one-way openings (microvalves). These allow fluid to enter while helping to prevent it flowing back out.

Together, these two systems work side by side to help maintain fluid balance, support healthy tissues and contribute to normal immune function.

💙 Did you know?
The lymphatic system returns around 2–4 litres of fluid back into the bloodstream every day, helping to prevent fluid from accumulating in healthy tissues.

📚 This is Page 2 of my educational series.

➡️ Next Page: Inside the Initial Lymphatic Capillary – where we’ll explore the tiny structures that begin the journey of lymph.

What is the lymphatic system? 🤔

Many people have heard of the lymphatic system, but very few know what it actually does.

Your lymphatic system is your body’s natural drainage and immune network. It helps to:

💧 Return excess fluid back to your bloodstream

🛡️ Support your immune system by filtering harmful bacteria and viruses

🌿 Remove proteins, waste products and cellular debris from your tissues

🥑 Absorb dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins from your digestive system

Unlike your heart, your lymphatic system doesn’t have a central pump. It relies on movement, breathing, muscle activity and healthy lymphatic vessels to keep lymph flowing.

Understanding how it works is the first step to understanding why Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be so beneficial for the right person.

📚 This is Page 1 of my new educational series, where I’ll be breaking down the lymphatic system into easy-to-understand topics inspired by the Dr Vodder method.

💙 Save this post so you can build your knowledge with me, and keep an eye out for Page 2 – Blood Capillaries vs Initial Lymphatic Capillaries coming soon.

💬 Is there anything about the lymphatic system you’ve always wondered? Let me know in the comments—I may cover it in a future page!

💧 WHAT IS LYMPH?

Lymph is a clear fluid that circulates through the lymphatic system.

It helps transport:

✓ Water
✓ Proteins
