I've been thinking a lot lately about how easy it can be to run away from the things we actually need to face.
Sometimes we know exactly what we need to do, but we don't do it.
We put it off.
We overthink.
We distract ourselves.
We tell ourselves we'll deal with it tomorrow.
Sometimes we're frightened of making the wrong decision. Sometimes we're protecting ourselves from getting hurt and sometimes, if we're honest, we're simply not ready to face what we already know deep down.
I've experienced that myself.
And I've learned that avoiding something doesn't necessarily make it disappear. Sometimes it just means we carry it around with us for longer.
Then comes the regret...
The “what ifs”
The “I wish I'd…”
The wondering about what might have happened if we'd been brave enough to take that step.
But I'm learning that self care isn't always about doing the things that feel comfortable.
Sometimes self care is about stopping, being honest with ourselves and asking:
"What do I really need right now?"
It might be rest.
It might be a boundary.
It might be letting go.
It might be taking a chance.
Or simply giving ourselves permission to breathe and feel what we've been trying so hard not to feel.
This is one of the reasons I love reflexology.
A session gives you somewhere to stop.
Somewhere to put the outside world down for an hour and reconnect with yourself.
Reflexology can't make the decisions for you or change what's happened, but it can give you that precious space to slow down, relax and listen to yourself again.
Because sometimes the answer isn't to run away from what we're feeling.
Sometimes we just need to stop running...
