Centre for Sustainable Healthcare What is the problem? Studies show that climate change is the biggest threat to health this century. What is the solution?

The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare is a global charity and world leader in sustainable healthcare research and expertise, committed to transforming the healthcare sector by integrating clinical care, wellbeing, and sustainability. Reports also show that the NHS is one of the biggest carbon polluters in the UK, being responsible for 21 million tonnes of CO2 each year - representing 25% of all public sector carbon emissions in England. It has an urgent imperative to act swiftly to reduce this, and to promote healthy, ‘green’ practices as opposed to being the country’s largest carbon polluter. The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) is working with key partners to engage healthcare professionals, patients and the wider community in understanding the connections between health and environment and the importance of adopting sustainable practices at work and at home. As the NHS has contact with millions of people every day as patients and employs over 1.3 million people, it has the potential to reach huge swathes of the population with positive health and environmental messages. The ‘convenient truth’ is that what is good for the environment is also good for people’s health. Why is the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare best placed to carry this out? CSH was set up in 2008 out of concern for the future of people’s health. CSH is fortunate in having a wealth of experience both within its own small team, and through a wide network of partners, in the fields of health and the environment. During the past three years we have developed a range of projects to green the NHS. Our programmes concentrate on three areas: engagement; knowledge sharing; and transformation. CSH is now established as an independent organisation, having been ‘incubated’ by the charity Knowledge into Action for the first two years. Our close understanding of healthcare and of the health system in the UK, combined with our knowledge of sustainability and how these link enables us to work with partners in both these spheres to open doors and share ideas.

Sustainability in Quality Improvement (SusQI) is an approach to improving healthcare in a holistic way, by assessing quality and value through the sustainable value lens. In SusQI, the health outcomes of a service are measured against its environmental, social and economic costs and impacts to determine its “sustainable value”. Learn how you can apply this to your organisation. Join our SusQI courses:
19 November - Sustainability in Quality Improvement (SusQI)

The NHS Forest Conference takes place tomorrow (15 Oct) and there's still time to book a ticket. Join us early (9.45am-10.00am) as the Deepwood project invites us to listen remotely into a world we may never have heard before. Attaching multiple biosensors to a living tree, Mechanimal (Tom Bailey and Xavier Velastin) convert the tiniest of internal changes – a fluctuation in sap flow or electrical conductivity – into stunning soundscapes. Designed as a meditative, realtime encounter with a living tree, Deepwood offers us a glimpse into how a non-human life form reacts to the world we all share. It's been created for a range of delivery scenarios across artistic, health and wellbeing contexts, and is available for booking. It's a rare opportunity not to be missed. Tickets are £5 or email [email protected] for a free ticket if you wouldn't otherwise be able to attend. Money raised from the tickets supports CSH’s Green Space for Health programme. Have you booked your ticket for the NHS Forest Conference? Amongst our fantastic speakers is Heather Jones. Heather has been a practice nurse for six years, and for much of these a senior Nurse Educator with the South Yorkshire Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub. Prior to nursing she completed a PhD which looked at the influence of life course transitions on travel behaviour. At the Training Hub Heather has developed and delivered experiential learning days for GPs and nurses at a local RSPB reserve which focus on nature connection and its role for patients and staff wellbeing. Visiting practice nurses across general practice in South Yorkshire has given Heather an insight in to a number of nurse-led gardening projects on general practice sites. Her talk will reflect on the potential of community health care sites to contribute to neighbourhood nature recovery and climate resilience, as well as considering what barriers exist to realising such opportunities. Tickets are £5 or email [email protected] for a free ticket if you wouldn't otherwise be able to attend. Money raised from the tickets supports CSH’s Green Space for Health programme.
