It’s National Operating Department Practitioners (ODP) Day today, celebrating the often-unsung members of hospitals’ surgical teams.

SageTech Medical’s head of business development, Liam Mulholland, is an experienced ODP with over 10 years of experience in the NHS, bringing a wealth of anaesthetic practice knowledge and expertise to the development and implementation of gas capture technology into theatre.

In the infancy of SageTech Medical's waste anaesthetic gas capture product development, we explored the use of sensor technologies to display the fill level of our SID-Can filters. We found sensors to be frequently inconsistent and too unreliable to use as a viable method of detecting and displaying the fill level of our SID-Cans.

We instead looked to develop our SID-Docks with load cells, as they have:

- High precision and accuracy measuring agent weight gain.
- Long-term stability and measuring consistency to allow flexibility in device placement.
- Better durability for long-term use in line with the SID-Docks 10 year serviceable life.
- Real-time fill level alarm and bypass system to protect staff when SID-Cans become full.

Essential volatile anaesthetic gases contribute up to 0.1% of the world’s annual CO2e emissions, equal to the global contribution of Portugal.

Various countries have reduced the use of desflurane over recent years, but more can be done to remove the atmospheric release of sevoflurane.
