Top tip no 3 for surviving December during (peri)menopause:

👉🏻 Ditch or reduce anything that puts additional stress on your already fizzy system. It is very easy to get totally wired from stimulants like caffeine and sugar. And rather than a toddler getting a full blown meltdown (which could of course happen) you are more likely to end up anxious, overwhelmed, tearful, edgy, shouty, irritable or go down with a migraine, a strained joint or tendon and palpitations…😵‍💫

So to help keep your nervous system regulated and your sleep vaguely intact, please avoid or at least reduce your intake of caffeinated and fizzy drinks, alcohol, sugar, highly processed foods, easy carbs (white bread, pasta, cakes and biscuits made with white flour and often lots of sugar) and replace them with simpler whole foods or home made equivalents. 🧁

Any festive time has been turned into a sugar-fest by the current dominating culture and it’s okay to choose differently. Of course we all like a treat every now and again and you don’t have to turn into the healthy food police but remember you and your body take the hit, no-one else. And in particular when your reserves and resilience are lower due to the major physiological transition of menopause you need to be kind on your body, which has a direct impact on your mental wellbeing. 😃

So be prepared. Have some simple snacks (apples, dried fruit, nuts) at hand when you might be tempted. Or practise some simple phrases when you are offered yet another box of celebrations and biscuits. Donate them to a raffle. Go for the low or no alcohol options a bit more often. You will get much further along December with your sanity at least partly intact. 🥳

Top tip no 1 for surviving December during (peri)menopause:

Allow yourself a break!! Take time out by yourself for yourself regularly. Make it a priority. It doesn’t need to be long. Short 5-10 min breaks can help, longer are even better but don’t add them on the beginning or the end of an already busy day. Don’t skip sleep for it. Fit it in, in between.

Make it something that suits and nourishes you. This is different for everybody. Check your energy levels. It may be a nap if you are feeling exhausted, it may be a walk or run of your head is spinning with overwhelm. A bath is perfect for some- and if you can add candles or music, even better. But 10 mins in silent contemplation or doing some breathing exercises could be just what you need.

Other ideas: doodling or crafting, journaling, listening to music, gentle movements or yoga, watering the plants mindfully, taking time to eat without distractions, the list is endless. Don’t overthink it, but start your day planning which little breaks you might fit in that day.

You need it and you deserve it! Let me know in the comments 👇🏻what your favourite type of break is.

Do you really want to grow and progress, learn, evolve and make the most of this precious life? 🤩

Sometimes you cannot see the road ahead clearly, let alone the final destination. 🧐

Sometimes you are surrounded by a thick fog and you can only see where you are in this moment. 😶

Sometimes you’d rather stop and turn around, make your way back to the safety of where you have already been. 😬

But the only way forward is to take that next small step. To find the rock that gives you stable footing. To step into the unknown. 🫣

Maybe you’ve determined the path you want to take and are following a clear route. 😀

But often you are stepping into uncharted territory, a new terrain, mapping it out as you go along. 😳

Or it may be a path many have already taken, but your way, your style, your steps will be unique. 😎

If the clouds break up, you may get a glimpse of the summit. Or you may not. 🏔️

In any case, take courage, take that step! Many small steps will get you much further than you could have imagined. ✨

And if you are looking for some guidance, a map or a manual to your unique journey, find someone or something that suits you. Likeminded souls to share it with. A guide to navigate the challenges, who will cheer you on and bring out the best in you. Maybe I can be a part of your journey. I’d be honoured. 😌

Mental Health Awareness Week

Let’s start with the elephant in the room: Mental Health is a misnomer because it implies there is a distinction between physical and mental health, which isn’t even possible because all mental ‘illness’ and emotional distress result in physiological changes in the body. 🤯

But for the sake of raising awareness and talking about the importance of regulating our emotions, we’ll go with it this week. The key words here are: AWARENESS and REGULATION. Being aware in the moment, feeling it in the body and then allowing it to pass through in order to come to a new sense of equilibrium and clarity. 😀

How well are you able to regulate? Do you dwell on things and hold on to resentments or anger? Do you worry about what could happen and try to control as many external circumstances as possible? Are you present in the moment? Can you let stress hormones wash out of your system so it can recover and restore? 🧘

Do you have ways to help this process? Do you prioritise time for yourself, with friends, in nature? I am lucky to live in Cornwall with much beauty all around me, but there are many ways to achieve nervous system regulation. Having plants, stroking pets, seeing pretty fabrics or art, smelling delicious scents, tasting good food, listening to music, going outside in all weathers, cuddling loved ones, meeting friends, the list goes on. ❤️

Have you ever made a list or consciously made time to prioritise these sensory experiences? If not, now’s the time! Tell me your favourite one.
