of Ruth's practice are in traditional Western Herbalism, she has sought diversity in her inspirations having worked with and learnt from herbalists from all around the UK. She also works with a collective of Herbalist first aiders at festivals around the UK providing orthodox and herbal first aid. Sharing the herbal wisdom is where Ruth's passion lies, she believes everyone should be empowered with the knowledge and skills to treat simple conditions at home with the powerful medicines growing so abundantly around us. Small business week feels a fitting moment to pause and reflect!

Running a small business is no small feat! Behind the scenes are long days (into nights), hard decisions, unexpected costs, moments of self-doubt and wearing many, many hats. As a one-woman band, there have been times this journey has felt utterly overwhelming - but also deeply meaningful.

The Apothecary was built on a whim (it's true - I just thought let's throw everything at this right now and see what happens), with all my life's savings, a crowdfund, a vision to bring herbal medicine back to the high street and reconnect our communities with natural healthcare. Every conversation, consultation, workshop booking, remedy purchased truly means the world. It also supports my family. I don't share my personal life in here often but as well as a small biz owner, I am also a solo parent to my son and cat!

Thank you for supporting small, local, independent businesses - it's school shoes, piano lessons, clubs and this paying the bills! Supporting small businesses is supporting real people doing real things.

I came across this interview of Dr. Barbara Theiss, a European trained naturopath bringing the conversation about the rise of chemical medicine in the West- just 100 years ago. These very same notions I find myself having now everyday as an Apothecarist!

Together Barbara and her husband Peter, a pharmacist ran an apothecary in Saarland, Germany, passed down from Peter's parents.

In this interview they named the moment in history (1920s), science rejected vitalism - the understanding that plants carry the life force that does the healing.

Medicine was replaced with a purely mechanical concept, switching to isolated single compounds. Synthesized in labs.

Stripping the plant of everything that made it whole, 'the way an apple loses something the moment you peel it'.

Losing the balance and chemical complexity that truly makes it medicine.

I remember listening to an interview by Simon Mills, an established voice in the field of Medical herbalism where he says there were only around 10 formally trained medical herbalists in UK around the time of 1980. We are now in the thousands. Long live the apothecaries!
