Something I’ve been seeing more and more in clinic lately: pelvic floors that are doing too much.

For years, the message has been “do your pelvic floor exercises,” but many people are walking around holding tension through their pelvic floor all day without realising it.

Sometimes the goal isn’t to strengthen—it’s to learn how to let go.

If you’re dealing with pelvic pain, urgency, constipation, discomfort with intimacy, or a feeling of constant tension, an overactive pelvic floor could be part of the picture.

Your pelvic floor should be able to contract, relax, and move with you—not stay switched on 24/7.

Sometimes the most important exercise isn’t another squeeze. It’s learning how to relax ✨

Update …….

It’s been a busy start to the spring with lots of exciting new plans waiting to hatch 🐣

The most exciting plans have been business planning with for ways we can be helping more women with their pelvic health.

There are also some very exciting collaborations hatching this spring with different workshop planning

The clinic is also getting busier each month too which is lovely to be helping more women face to face 🫶

Just to add to the load , we are also renting our house out this summer so that is a lot of work but it’s very satisfying seeing paint getting onto some bare plaster that shamefully has been there for almost 10 years 🙈

This weekend is going to be a well needed break (not exactly going to be complete rest and recoup), but having some time in the sea with lush friends will be magic 🫶

Hopefully we will get a little bit of surf as I’ve only managed 1 surf in the past 6 months (since our last surf girl weekend ! 🙈🙈🙈)- I’m not even sure I could call myself a surfer anymore . Let’s just hope I can still stand up on a wave 😂

Pelvic pain is more common than many people realise — but living with it shouldn’t be your “normal.”

Pelvic pain can show up in many ways:

• Pain during or after s3x

• Period pain that stops you from living your life

• Bladder or bowel discomfort

• Pain with exercise or sitting

• Persistent pain after childbirth

For many women, these symptoms are quietly endured for months or even years. Pelvic pain can affect work, relationships, mental wellbeing, and confidence in your own body.

The good news? Help is available.

Pelvic health physiotherapists are specially trained to assess and treat the muscles, nerves and tissues of the pelvic region.

Treatment may include:

✔ Personalised pelvic floor rehabilitation

✔ Muscle relaxation and coordination training

✔ Hands-on therapy

✔ Education about pain and recovery

✔ Gradual return to exercise and daily activities

Pelvic pain is real, it’s common, and it is treatable.

You deserve to be heard and supported.

If pelvic pain is affecting your life, know that you don’t have to manage it alone.

Let’s start the conversation and break the silence around pelvic health. 💜

This one hit deep 🥹 🫶

As Pelvic Health Physio’s we have a huge appreciation of how much pelvic floor issues affect lives.

A lovely client of mine had suffered with faecal incontinence for years before finally braving reaching out for help. The issue was affecting every part of her life- she struggled to go out and leave the house, it affected her mental health, her social life and intimate life.

Only a few weeks into her rehab, she has made great improvements already - when she left her appointment the other day she said “thank you so much , you’ve saved my life “ 🥹 FYI I did have a big lump in my throat!

There is still so much taboo around pelvic floor issues and in particular around leaking from the back passage - this leaves these women feeling even more alone , isolated and broken.

There is so much that can be done to help - we just need to get the message out there so these women don’t feel so alone , realise they are not broken , and are aware there is help available.

Faecal incontinence is way more prevalent than you could imagine (this could be leaking of stool or leaking of wind) - we hear about leaking urine but we don’t hear about leaking from the back passage.

If this is you, you are not alone and there is help available - just reach out 🥰

Relaxing and releasing the pelvic floor muscles is super important to allow good function

If we only focus on strength the muscles can get tense and wound up (like a tight spring). This means that the muscle is less likely able to absorb the forces going through it (during every day life)

Too much tension in our pelvic floor can still lead to pelvic floor issues like leaking and prolapse, and with pelvic pain conditions we generally want to be relaxing and releasing the pelvic floor too.

Try these exercises and you can either carry them out as a sequence, or choose the one that feels most comfortable to you and remain in the position for a few deep breaths.

If you suffer with pelvic pain or know you have tension in your pelvic floor then I would try to do these daily.

These exercises are taken from my online programme : The Pelvic Floor Masterclass - and are part on the release workbook.

Exercise 1 and 2: Deep breathing - such a simple activity but so important ! When you take a deep breath think about breathing into your whole rib cage (360 degrees). A deep breath is the simplest way to release your pelvic floor muscles and the beauty is this can be done anywhere !

Exercise 3: Cat Cow - using pelvic floor contraction to help aid release during movement (lovely for mobilising your spine too)

Exercise 4: Childs Pose - this can also be carried out as a wide leg Childs pose (the internal rotation at the hips really encourages a gentle stretch deep in the pelvis )

You can use pillows or a bolster to get really comfy and spend a bit of time here taking those deep breaths and letting go 🫶

Exercise 5: Happy Baby - you don’t have to carry out full happy baby 👶 to get the pelvic floor release - it’s best to choose a modified position that feels comfy (who can release, relax and let go when something feels uncomfortable).

Exercise 6: Legs up the wall pose - again choose a comfy position . You don’t have to keep your legs straight , you can bend them to relieve any tension in the hamstrings (at the back of the legs).

Let me know what you think and of course if you have any questions then feel free to DM me 🥰

Wow! The northern lights on our doorstep in Cornwall 🫶😍

Definitely a huge ✅ on my bucket list

What is on your bucket list ?

Having worked within pelvic health for over 15 years - I have met so many women that have bucket list goals that most other people would just take for granted.

Suffering with pelvic health issues can be so debilitating for women …..

Pelvic pain, dyspareunia (pain with s3x), leaking from the bladder , leaking from the back passage or vaginal prolapse (to name a few) can affect women in all aspects of their lives.

Bucket list goals I’ve heard in clinic have been :

*to have pain free s3x

*to go on holiday and travel without fear of leaking

*to leave the house without fear of leaking

*to go out dancing without that constant heaviness and pressure

*to have a relationship with someone

*to feel like me again

*to feel s3xy again

*to go 6 months without a UTI

*to feel “normal “ again

For some women suffering pelvic health issues, the bucket list goals often aren’t the “big” ones like seeing the northern lights, they can be the things most others don’t even think about.

There is so much help and support available to help women achieve these goals. Unfortunately, a lot of women still don’t know that help is available!

Together we can help break the taboo and share this important information with the women in our lives.

If you’re reading this and need help to achieve those bucket list goals that your pelvic health is preventing you from reaching then please reach out 🫶

DM if you have any questions or want more support 💖
