❤️Sciatica can make even simple everyday movements feel difficult.
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes irritated.
👉The pain often starts in the lower back and travels into the buttock and down the leg. For many people, the pain in the leg is actually worse than the pain in the back. It may also be accompanied by numbness or tingling in the calf or foot.
👉People often describe sciatic pain as sharp, shooting, or like an electric shock.

⭐️There are several possible causes, including disc injuries, wear and tear in the joints of the spine, inflammation around the nerve, or muscle tightness affecting the pathway of the sciatic nerve.

Osteopathic treatment can help identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and aims to reduce pain, improve movement, and support your recovery.

🎒Back to school means back to backpacks!

As the summer holidays come to an end, there’s plenty to think about… new uniforms, school shoes, PE kits and, of course, the school bag.
If your child has lots to carry to and from school, or between classrooms during the day, a few simple choices can help make their backpack more comfortable to carry:
📚 Choose a lightweight bag and try to avoid adding unnecessary extras, such as heavy toys or accessories.
📚 Look for wide, well-padded shoulder straps and adjust them so the backpack sits comfortably.
📚Choose a backpack with several compartments to help distribute the contents more evenly.
📚 Encourage children to use both shoulder straps, rather than carrying their backpack over one shoulder.
📚Pack heavier items closest to the back, with lighter items further away.

❤️And it’s worth having a regular clear-out too. School bags have a habit of collecting things that don't need to be carried around every day!

A few small changes can help make a backpack more comfortable to carry day after day.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy start to the new school year!

👌You don’t always need specialist equipment to keep moving.

❤️A simple water bottle can be a useful way to practise gentle shoulder mobility exercises at home.

In this video, we demonstrate a few easy movements that can help encourage shoulder mobility. Work within a comfortable range, move slowly and stop if you experience pain.

✨If you have ongoing shoulder pain, stiffness or reduced movement, it’s worth having it assessed so you can receive advice and exercises tailored to your individual needs.

Our medical herbalist Helen Shardlow offers the Food Detective test here at Oundle Osteopaths, helping to explore whether particular foods may be playing a part in ongoing symptoms.

👉Bloating, fatigue, headaches, brain fog and IBS-type symptoms can sometimes be linked to diet, but identifying individual triggers isn’t always straightforward.
👉The Food Detective test is a simple finger-prick blood test carried out in clinic, screening for IgG reactions to 59 commonly eaten foods, with results available in around 40 minutes.
⭐️The results can provide a useful starting point to help guide a more considered approach to diet, rather than removing foods at random.

If ongoing digestive or inflammatory symptoms have been troubling you, identifying your food triggers may be a sensible first step?To find out whether this test could be suitable for you, please call the clinic to book an appointment with Helen. 📞01832 272527
