80% of employers believe people with a learning disability can be productive at work, according to a Mencap survey of more than 1,600 UK employers conducted by Survation.

Yet almost half employ none.

Mencap's Job Squad are using their experiences to challenge assumptions about what people with a learning disability can do at work, and to show the value of supportive, inclusive workplaces.

Meet Janis. She's been a Customer Assistant at Tesco for 11 years thriving in a paid role.

Now she’s part of Mencap’s Job Squad, helping show that people with a learning disability belong in every workplace. Janis says having a job has helped grow her confidence and independence.

âš˝ What happens when 6 MPs swap their suits for football boots?

On day 2 of Learning Disability Week, Mencap colleagues, MPs and members of our Islington Me Time programme came together at Kennington Park for a friendly match.

The final score was 5-2 to Team MPs, but the real success was bringing people together and raising awareness of our campaign and the Learning Disability Register.

Mencap football team captain Vijay Patel said:

"Although we lost the game, the most important thing is we had fun out there and everyone was together."

"MPs and Lords were able to come and hear from people with a learning disability and learn more about what someone like me can do."

Are you on the Learning Disability Register?

This Laura shares why the answer to this question is important.

It helps doctors and nurses know how to support you in the best way. That could mean more time, clearer information, or reasonable adjustments. Being on the learning disability register means free annual health checks for people aged 14+, and priority access to flu vaccinations.

You do not need to have a formal diagnosis of a learning disability for the GP to add you to the learning disability register. The GP may ask you questions about your learning disability and how it affects your everyday life and add you to the learning disability register if they think you would benefit from being on it.

Every person’s experience is unique, and this week highlights the importance of making sure that every person is heard and supported in all aspects of life.
