Performing Magic for disabled people / teaching and adapting magic

Extreme Clowning started adapting magic for visually impaired people in 2003 - since then we have taught various workshops for disabled people who wish to learn magic. We have toured for Sense - where JJ and Jimmy (who is Deafblind) performed magic shows. JJ’s current assistant is Jonathon who has Cerebral Palsy and is getting a lot from learning magic. Together they won Blackpool Magic Convention

’s prestigious “Beat The Wand” contest in 2020 and continue to find new and innovative ways to make magic accessible.

Dear friends heading to Blackpool Magic Convention by the time you read this, you might be packing decks, polishing coins, loading the car, forgetting deodorant, planning which lectures to miss as theres to much going on at once.
We won’t be there this year.
The cost has crept beyond what we can justify. The crowds have grown to a point where wheelchairs simply can’t move safely through the dealer halls.
So while you walk into the Winter Gardens, we’ll be walking into care homes, schools, and day centres.
Magic Touch delivers free live magic shows for people with disabilities and learning disabilities across the UK.
No tickets.No fees.No funding cushion.
Just donated magic and time.
You know that drawer at home. The one with duplicate tricks. Lecture notes you bought twice. Props you meant to use but never did.
For you, they’re surplus.
For our audiences, they become the main event.
I’ve seen a deafblind man feel a silk vanish and gasp.I’ve seen someone with cerebral palsy insist on being the assistant again and wanting to do a bullet catch!
I’ve seen carers stand back and quietly wipe their eyes.
That is where your spare magic goes.
If you’re at Blackpool this week and you have anything you can spare, please pass it to Miraiker's World of Puppets the amazing Phil Flip on our behalf.
One trick can create a full show. One lecture set can train a performer. One bag of unused props can travel the country.
As you head into the convention, enjoy it. Learn. Be inspired.
And if you can, help us keep magic in the hands of people who rarely get to hold it.
Safe travels.
JJ

Subject: Help Us Keep Magic in the Hands of Those Who Need It Most

Dear Colleague,
I’m writing to you as someone within our own magic community.
Magic Touch is a not for profit organisation delivering free live magic shows for people with disabilities and learning disabilities across the UK.
No ticket sales.
No fees.
No wages.
Every show is powered by donated magic and the generosity of magicians and dealers who believe that everyone deserves to experience wonder.
For many of the people we perform for, our show is the only live entertainment they attend all year. Some rarely leave their care settings. Some have never been to a theatre. When the curtain rises, it matters.
This work has grown steadily, supported by members of the magic world who understand what magic can do.
We are grateful for the continued support of:
Marvin’s Magic
Marvin Berglas and the Berglas Foundation
Uri Geller
Kaymar Magic
Derren Brown
Richard Cadell
The Blackpool Magic Convention
To name just a few.
Their belief in this project keeps it moving forward.
We are now asking colleagues within the trade to consider donating magic.
Unused stock.
Retired routines.
Discontinued lines.
Demo items.
Effects sitting on shelves.
Our audiences may be disabled, but they are not fragile. They appreciate strong material, tension, humour and theatre. We are not looking for simplified magic. We are looking for real magic, performed responsibly and with care.
If you have something that could be brought back to life in performance, it could become a moment someone remembers for years.
Donations can be brought to the Blackpool Magic Convention and handed to:
Miraiker Wallace miraikers world of puppets
Phil Flip
Or we would be happy to arrange collection directly.
Magic Touch is built by magicians.
Supported by the trade.
And driven by the belief that wonder should never depend on income or ability.
Thank you for considering supporting this work.
Warm regards,
JJ

Right time to compile a list of v.i.p’s!
As from next year the Key theatre will be pushing magic touch and advertising in their schedule. The tickets will only be £3 each and carers will still be free but we have set up an agreement that I can have a VIP list which will instantly let people in Who have supported magic touch from the beginning. I can have up to 20 names on the list that does not include carers I can easily put the list together myself but I just wanted to check anyone who is interested could comment below and you will be included, I didn’t just want to assume LOL
