Today is World Sight Day 2026!

More than two million people in the UK are living with significant sight loss right now. That number is expected to double by 2050.

90% of sight loss worldwide is preventable or treatable. The care exists. The challenge is getting it to the people who need it.

Today, the IAPB is asking people to share their stories and pledge to take their own eye health seriously. If you haven't had an eye test in the last two years, today is a good day to book one. In the UK, NHS eye tests are free for many people, including anyone over 60.

And if you know someone who might benefit from support, we've put together a short guide at https://realsam.co.uk/world-sight-day-2026-what-it-is-and-why-it-matters/

Next Thursday, the 8th of October, is World Sight Day 2026 👁

Run every year by VISION 2020/IAPB, it's the biggest global awareness event for blindness and vision impairment, and an important moment to speak about prevention, access, and the 43 million people living with blindness worldwide.

This year's campaign theme is the same as last year: , and this year the IAPB are calling on five million people to make a pledge to take their eye health seriously.

We've written a short guide to what World Sight Day is all about, helpful resources for what you can do to help others and yourself, and what's happening this year in the UK.

This week is National Eye Health Week.

More than two million people in the UK live with significant sight loss, half of which is avoidable. A routine eye test can detect the early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts before symptoms appear. It can also pick up diabetes and high blood pressure.

The NHS has free sight tests accessible to anyone over 60 or anyone with a family history of glaucoma. You can check your eligibility for a free test on the NHS website here: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/opticians/free-nhs-eye-tests-and-optical-vouchers/

When did you last have one? If you can't remember, book it this week.

Read our blog for more on what Eye Health Week is about, and more links to helpful resources and support if you're already living with sight loss. Link in bio.

Is anyone else actually excited for the weather to cool off? ❄️

Sure, it can get a little chilly, but with colder weather comes hot drinks, fuzzy socks, open fires, cozier evenings, and best of all, the time for you to get tucked into a good book.

If that sounds up your alley, then you’ll love RealSAM BookClub: a service that combines over 50,000 curated accessible books, newspapers, magazines, and podcasts, available across all your devices. Start a book on your Alexa speaker at home, continue on your phone when you leave: BookClub will never lose your place.

When you're supporting someone with sight loss, most people start by looking for a phone.

But a phone is rarely the only thing that needs to change. A care needs assessment. Meals. Mobility. Financial benefits most families don't know they're entitled to. Technology that actually works rather than adapts.

We've created an (updated) practical guide for anyone supporting a blind or partially sighted person for September 2026, with current contacts, services, and resources.
