What do you think of as ‘good posture’?
It used to be a case of “Stand up straight, shoulders back”!
But we look at the body differently these days. In the 21st Century, there is increasingly an understanding that we are biotensegral structures; in other words, internally balancing tension and compression to maintain our structural integrity and adaptability. And, knowing that the fascia connects every part of us, nose to toes, back and front, we can see that any restriction in one part of the body, cascading through the fascia, must affect that internal balance, not just locally but often throughout the body, to a greater or lesser degree. Whether it is scarring with adhesions creating the restriction, or emotional holding from grief, or a twisted ankle, we are now moving towards a different way of healing ourselves.
Increasingly, the power of light touch is being recognised, and this is where the new range of modalities comes in – light touch work such as Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork, Fascial Unwinding, micromovement training, craniosacral therapy, etc. So, find the therapy that is right for you; be gentle, feel your way, breathe more deeply, and listen to the body rather than forcing it into positions and movements that create more strain.
As the internal balance corrects, other things will change. Combining this work with consciously improving how we sit and stand aids mobility, range of movement, functionality, circulation and how we feel about ourselves; our posture benefits as we move more easily, we breathe more deeply, and we hold our heads high as we fall in love with our bodies again. No need for “Stand up straight, shoulders back”, as natural fluidity is restored and we allow ourselves to be the best we can be.
