A French court has for the first time recognised cosmic radiation as a factor in the breast cancer of a long-serving flight attendant.

⚠️ A landmark occupational health ruling in France has highlighted an often-overlooked workplace exposure: cosmic radiation.

A French court has, for the first time, recognised cosmic radiation as a contributing factor in the breast cancer of a long-serving Air France flight attendant.

The former flight attendant had accumulated 12,600 flight hours over a 30-year career, with more than half of those hours worked at night.

The court identified three carcinogenic occupational hazards associated with her work:

✈️ Cosmic radiation from prolonged high-altitude flying
🌙 Prolonged night work
🚬 Historical exposure to passive smoking on aircraft

The ruling follows growing research into occupational exposure among aircrew. A recent Harvard Medical School study reported that flight attendants and pilots had the highest proportion of radiation-related cancer deaths among more than 500 occupations studied.

What makes this particularly interesting from an Occupational Health perspective is the wider question it raises:

Are we sufficiently considering cumulative and less visible occupational exposures when assessing long-term worker health?

Risk isn't always something we can see, hear or immediately measure in its impact. Exposure can accumulate over many years, and changes in evidence may alter how we understand the relationship between occupation and disease.

This landmark case is certainly one for Occupational Health professionals to watch.

Former Air France stewardess Sophie Lainault has had her cancer recognised as an occupational disease.

Getting Health Surveillance Right: Working Together to Protect Worker Health

📅 1st October 2026
📍 Enterprise Centre, Bridge Street, Derby, DE1 3LD
💷 £90 + VAT per delegate – including lunch & refreshments

GTS-MedOH and Greys Specialist Recruitment are delighted to be working in collaboration with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to bring you a one-day conference focused on getting statutory health surveillance right and, ultimately, better protecting worker health.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Occupational Health professionals, health surveillance providers and those responsible for workplace health programmes to hear from specialists, take part in practical workshops and contribute to important discussion around how we can improve health surveillance together.

⭐ WHAT'S ON THE AGENDA?
🔹 Risk-Based Health Surveillance & How to Get It Right
Dr Steve Forman
Principal Medical Adviser, HSE
Steve will explore statutory health surveillance as a legal, risk-based control measure – not simply a routine service – including opportunities for improvement identified through HSE inspection activity.

💬 Understanding the Barriers to Effective Occupational Health Service Delivery
What prevents duty holders from providing the service they want to offer?
Our panel will facilitate questions and discussion around the practical challenges faced by organisations, how these can be overcome and what could improve Occupational Health outcomes for workers.

Our panel includes:
⭐ Diane Romano-Woodward
⭐ Pippa Crouch
⭐ Emma Karagkevrekis
⭐ Neil Loach

🔹 Designing Compliant & Effective Statutory Health Surveillance Systems
Susan Donnelly
HM Principal Inspector at HSE
Susan will explore HSE's minimum expectations for Occupational Health provision in statutory health surveillance, the core elements required for an effective system and how risk-based health surveillance should feed into the wider health and safety management system to proactively reduce harm.

💬 Panel Reflection & Discussion
Our panel will explore the challenges faced by providers and duty holders in delivering effective statutory health surveillance, examples of good practice, and what support, resources and system changes could help OH services achieve their full preventive potential.

🛠️ PRACTICAL BREAKOUT WORKSHOPS
Delegates will pre-book TWO of THREE practical workshops, allowing for smaller-group discussion and applied learning.

🌬️ A – LEV & Dust Control Demonstration
Practical exposure control and understanding how control effectiveness should influence statutory health surveillance.

🔊 B – Connecting Noise Control & Health Surveillance
Led by a Specialist Inspector – Noise & Vibration, exploring noise risk assessments, exposure controls, risk management, the role of OH providers and key messages from HSE's upcoming workplace noise intervention activity.

🔍 C – Where Can Systems Fail?
Led by an experienced OH Practitioner with Susan Donnelly, examining potential weak points within statutory health surveillance systems – from commissioning and risk identification through to delivery, escalation and action.

🤝 THE IMPACT OF WORKING TOGETHER
We'll also hear a real-world example of successful collaboration and change, including the journey leading to the current HAVS supplier project and wider industry change within the utilities sector.

💬 Final Panel Reflection – The Full Circle of an Effective Health Management System
We'll bring the learning from the day together, reflect on the breakout sessions and discuss what we can take back into practice to shape and improve health surveillance and better protect worker health.

🤝 EXHIBITORS & EVENT SUPPORTERS
We are also delighted to be supported on the day by:
⭐ Health Partners
⭐ Apollo
⭐ Noise and Vibration Solutions Limited
⭐ EOPH

A great opportunity to meet and network with organisations working across Occupational Health, workplace health and health surveillance.
