Within 36 hours of completing my Bowen Therapy exams, I was in the labs of Imperial
College of Medicine, on a 3 day course exploring the human form. Then being very fortunate to travel to the St.Andrews University of Medicine in Scotland, attending a very intensive week of hands-on human dissection course with Gil Hedley of Integral Anatomy the following year. A course that fundamentally changed the way I saw the human body.

Not just on a structural level. It was true appreciation for the life force, the energy, the very light and collection of a lifetime of experience that leads us up to the present day of our lives, regardless of age, that animates our fleshy body. That priceless factor that makes us all so wonderfully individual and what influences the way we move. And in that moment, the profound absence of it.

After a plethora of Bowen led courses, I found myself exploring movement and pain from different perspectives. With some incredible peers, one being the late, great Stephen Braybrook. Who’s ethos was to always question everything. Look at things from so many angles, and then some more. And for two gentlemen, Matt Hudson and Danny Greeves, for igniting the magic woven in words and the curiosity about non-verbal communication and congruence. It is something that keeps me very humble.

Despite regular Bowen sessions I was still struggling with maintaining a stable pelvis and it was whilst attending a last minute course in 2016 on positional release work and energy awareness I discovered Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork. Very curious about my own 14” nephrectomy scar, I decided to investigate. It gave me all the answers I was looking for… and then some more.

This aspect of body work captured me in so many ways. Training in further Sharon Wheeler’s courses in Breast Cancer and going on to train with Restore Scar Therapy as a scar practitioner and specialist Oncology Scar Therapist.

Though it does not stop there. This venture into the world of bodywork is infinite. To understand what makes us human and the journey to strive for a life of balance, of healthy longevity and remaining mobile is one we all face at any given time.

So if I can help people achieve that through what I do… that is indeed a privilege.
Thank you for being part of my journey.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 ….𝙗𝙮 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣…

Having no idea what the Bowen Technique was, just that it was pretty gentle, I just took what felt like a life line at the time. Determined to avoid going down the path of powerful pain medication or invasive procedures.

I won’t lie, it was an experience I won’t forget as first treatments go! First getting past the initial, “can’t see how this is going to work” phase after the first few moves, things got interesting! I started feeling like my lower body had been filled with ice, then the shaking which lasted about 20 minutes, then a sense of calm. But it was not a calm as I have ever experienced. The words that spring to mind are “at a grassroots level of calm”. It felt like something so deeply systemic within the realms of neurology had shifted.

Understanding what I do now, the amount of physical trauma I had endured courtesy of horses, had remained as unprocessed shock. As I continued my Bowen treatments, my rather battered body continued to respond in some interesting ways, all the while my back pain was reducing. Unexpectedly, so was my knee, ankle and shoulder, all historic horse related injuries. Within a couple months I was virtually painfree and back in the gym. Feeling really is believing and I chose to continue monthly appointments because of my history of injury.

Having undergone the Bowen approach, it made me realise there are other ways to help people who felt like I did, believing pain meds or nerve blocks were the only options left. Struggling with seeing the same generic care I wanted to be more hands on, to be more pro-active in facilitating change for people.

So I took the route of becoming a Bowen Therapy practitioner, completely unaware how my life would change and a world about to open up to me in so many ways.

After taking time out, I returned to a supporting role working with individuals experiencing learning difficulties and acquired brain injuries. Again it was fascinating to work with individuals that found ways to navigate everyday living. What their biggest challenges were and the steps they took to break those challenges down and live life to their very best.

Deciding to explore more of the care world, I took the opportunity to work in a wonderful care home in a small Cornish village. It was a privilege to listen to life stories, experiences and being the recipient of their wisdom. Though the stark reality of the loneliness they expressed, when they were the only remaining people to outlive all their dear friends, spouses and even their children, sat with me deeply.

Deciding to work much closer to home, I stepped out of the care world and trained as a barista. A completely different experience, yet another fantastic opportunity to observe human behaviour, from the devout regulars, people passing through and the comradery when it was so busy, never a dull moment, but I missed the care work.

Deciding to return back to healthcare, I found myself working as a carer in the community caring for a vast array of clients. Those living with Parkinson’s, MS, Huntingdon’s, stroke, chronic pain, compromised mobility, those on the palliative care path and so much more. It was very rewarding. What really spiked my curiosity was seeing how many clients living with the same life changing condition, had differing attitudes and experiences of their condition… and that’s when I started to question why there was such a generic approach to the medical model.

Especially as I had started to experience significantly increased back pain, from a spinal injury I suffered when I came off my horse 10yrs previously. Landing on my back onto a dry river bed of boulders. Despite trying many therapies I could that would not exacerbate the pain, it was pointed out by my GP that long-term medication or spinal nerve injections were the options now left on the table.

That’s when someone recommended I try the Bowen Technique.

Whilst trying to figure out what I wanted to do, by way of career, I found myself
exploring hospitality, catering and lifeguarding… all great opportunities to
observe human behaviour. But it was whilst working nights in a petrol station,
so I could continue enjoying my horse, as well as study at the Open University, I
was found collapsed behind the counter. Fighting my body’s need to rest while
experiencing a very bad head cold, made me realise, nights were draining me in
so many ways. A change was called for.

This change sparked my journey into the world of mental health and
neurodivergency. Initially, I started working with wonderful individuals with
Asperger’s and Autism, then with young adolescents that presented with more
complex issues. Often experiencing frustration and difficulties in expressing
themselves or being understood, these young adults would often become violent
and agressive. I will have to say, it is impressive how far heavy bits of furniture
can travel, when you least expect it!

Yet it was an incredible experience to be able to use my horse to help an
individual we supported, experience a calmness as the client groomed and fed
her. A joy to see as it permeated into a more peaceful and constructive week
until they got to see Kimberley again at the weekend.

During a challenging situation with another client we supported, a window sill
ledge was ripped off and unfortunately another colleague and I were struck
across the head. The shock of the event and working an average of 70-84 hrs a
week in such an intense environment, led to mental exhaustion and I was forced
to leave.

Again it was an opportunity to learn how missing the small of cues non-verbally can lead to a cacophony of events.

….𝙗𝙮 𝐰𝒂𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣.

I am aware that I have been very quiet here, though I have been fortunate to
have many people that are interested in what I do and the person behind the
scenes. So I would like to take the opportunity, if I may, to make your
acquaintance, and introduce myself over the next 5 days.

Originally training to be a riding instructor, I was always fascinated by form and
function, how conformation played a crucial role in which discipline a horse
would excel in. How it could enhance performance and potentially lend itself to
a horse leading a long and fruitful career with reduced risk of injury.

It was also interesting to see how the introduction of a rider could change a
horse’s fluid dynamic, especially a rider that was novice or unbalanced in the
saddle. Reminding me of the symbiotic relationship we have with everyday life
and the impact it has on us and the way we move.

Being fortunate to work on a family run yard in Bodmin, it was a joy to teach
the 2 YTS students (showing my age) and to back and break the young horses.
Sadly, the family chose to retire and I found myself in a wonderful high end
competition livery yard in Ascot. Having its own private access to Windsor
Great Park, we cared for a variety of horses from driving to endurance. With the
added bonus of rehabilitating ex racehorses to transition into new lives.

But it was during my time at Ascot, I sustained a back injury that was to cut my
full-time equine career short. Whilst it did leave me very much in the wilderness
for some time career wise, it did not stop my love for horses… so I got my own,
a fiery 21/2 yo chestnut warmblood mare called Kimberely Moor.

She was the beginning of a journey into non-verbal communication and how
body language can convey much about our pain and fear of movement.

Working with the body can sometimes seem like auditioning for a role as a sleuth in a detective series. And it was very much the case with one fabulous client coming in with sciatic pain that was shifting from left to right and shin splints in the right leg.

After assessment and a few treatments, the shin splint pain had gone and 90% of the sciatic pain had abated, and whilst the client was over the moon with how things were progressing, I still felt the root cause lay elsewhere… and “indeed my Dr. Watson’s it did!”.

Despite showing balance on the therapy table and in muscle tonicity, there was still a small deficit in functional movement.

Moving back to the right foot and the ankle, for the second time, the imbalance had started to show itself, as the body had started to sort itself out with cues being initiated from the prior treatments.

After addressing the ankle and forefoot for a second time it was possible to feel the dysfunction at a much deeper level, as the tissues had become much softer. Using a slightly differing approach to treat, both the remainder of the sciatic pain and tightness in the quads in the right leg completely eased. All functional movement was restored and the client felt much freer, not only in both legs but also in her pelvis.

It is a wonderful and timely reminder, that the body will often make the changes it deems the most important and in order of necessity, after months if not years of compensatory patterns. Before some root causes may show themselves.

Sometimes recovery is about progress and not perfection… the rest is how to look good in a deer stalker hat, choosing the right pipe while wielding a magnifying glass

I often find myself immersed in gratitude, when having the opportunity to help people shift from a place of pain to one of comfort. And one such case was the opening treatment in my clinic on Monday.

A lovely young lady that had developed a lot of shoulder pain, that had radiated to the opposite shoulder and was coupled with a bad migraine that she had been experiencing for the 6th day running, when she came in to see me.

After assessment and treatment, it was a blessing to have this lovely client leave, virtually pain free, with only a small residual pain in her shoulder blade and with no headache at all.

On following up the next evening after a day of her doing manual work it was great to receive wonderful feedback -

“My back and neck feel amazing. My head is fine and my eyes don’t hurt at all when I move them. My shoulder blade pain has gone. I feel completely repaired!”

If you find yourself in discomfort and would like to know if the aray of therapies on offer could help you, then please do get in contact on 07544 844970 or drop a message via DM.

It would be a pleasure to talk to you.

🌿 Happy House Plant Appreciation Day!🌿

For those that have been to my clinic, know my love 😍 of plants 🌱... and its often been a great source of conversation. 🎍even down to swapping and propagating to gift to clients!

And sharing an abundance of veggies 🍅🥔 home grown from my garden... with great feedback 🥳 always wonderful to hear 👂 for this very amateur though keen gardener 🌳

I’m a firm believer, in creating an environment that welcomes you. A place where you can kick off your shoes 👟 👠 👞 , hang your coat 🧥 up and just breathe 😌.

One that’s entirely about creating an environment that attributes to your healing... and so many studies say plants and nature contributes to that 😁

So just a snippet of my plants that welcome clients in 😁

Whatever you’re up to, have a great weekend 💗🐾

Well I may have been quiet 🤫 on here....

I’ve certainly been busy creating 👷🏻‍♀️⚙️🧱in the clinic...

and super pleased with the results and feed back from client case studies 📋 who volunteered to be guinea pigs, for the trauma informed body work 🙌 I’ve been working on.

"Julie is a wonderful practitioner. I recently had the privilege of having regular trauma informed bodywork treatments with Julie as a case study.
I have been going through a particularly stressful time and also dealing with historic trauma and these regular treatments have absolutely helped me to soothe my nervous system.

I have fibromyalgia which can cause a significant amount of pain and fatigue, this treatment is gentle enough that it didn't cause me to flare but helped reduce pain after my sessions.

Julie is always professional and works with compassion and respect. She seemed to intuitively know where to focus within each session.

Her clinic is a beautiful space where you can relax and feel supported on your healing journey and there is the added bonus of doggy cuddles, absolute bliss!
I'm so thankful for the opportunity to experience this wonderful treatment and definitely recommend for anyone looking to reduce stress, tension and let go of trauma trapped in the body.

Thank you Julie"
