Dear Families and Friends,
We would like to share some exciting developments taking place at Merchant House over the coming weeks.
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing safe, compassionate and person-centred care, we are introducing two innovative technologies within our homes: EARZZ and PainChek.
EARZZ is an AI-supported acoustic monitoring system designed to support resident wellbeing and safety, particularly during the night. The system recognises important sounds such as movement, coughing, distress sounds or knocks, helping staff respond more proactively whilst also promoting dignity and reducing unnecessary room checks. Importantly, EARZZ does not record conversations or speech — it is designed to recognise selected sounds only, helping us balance safety with privacy and comfort.
PainChek is a clinically validated digital pain assessment tool that helps staff identify and monitor pain, especially for people living with dementia or those who may struggle to communicate discomfort verbally. Using observational indicators and facial recognition technology, PainChek supports our teams to provide earlier interventions, better pain management and improved comfort for residents.
Over the next week, members of our care teams will be speaking with residents and families about these initiatives, answering questions and discussing how the technology will be used within the homes.
We understand that new technology can sometimes raise questions, and we would very much welcome any conversations you may wish to have. If you have any concerns or would simply like more information, please do not hesitate to contact:
