Defense-in-Depth: Biovault’s 6 Pillars of Healthcare Data Security

Biovault operates within one of the most strictly regulated data environments in UK healthcare. Because we process and store human cells and tissue for clinical therapies and partner directly with the NHS, our approach to data security goes far beyond standard GDPR compliance to reflect the profound clinical sensitivity of the information we handle.

In our latest Insights article, we share how we navigate regulatory complexity to protect patient safety.

Kit Spotlight: -196°C Liquid nitrogen storage systems

-196°C. Aka the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. The perfect temperature for the cryogenic preservation of stem cells and biological tissues.

Our liquid nitrogen storage suite features continuous vapour-phase telemetry and multi-redundant power backups. Our engineers monitor environmental controls 24/7 so our NHS and private clinical partners never have to worry.

DLIs should be ready when they're needed, not prepared in haste.

At Biovault Technical, we prepare and cryopreserve donor lymphocyte infusions during initial stem cell processing, not weeks later, after a donor recall.

That means faster access, reduced operational burden, and greater certainty when clinical decisions become time-critical.

Talk to Biovault Technical about pre-prepared DLI processing and storage.

Donor lymphocyte infusions (DLIs) can play an important role in helping patients after a stem cell transplant.

If treatment needs to happen quickly, having the cells ready can make all the difference.

At Biovault Technical, we prepare and store DLIs at the time of the original stem cell collection, so they are available if needed later.

That means the donor may not need to go through another collection, and the clinical team doesn't need to start from scratch when time matters.

Our latest Insights article explains how preparing DLIs in advance can help reduce delays, ease the burden on donors and support faster access to treatment.

Because when the decision is made, the cells should be ready.

Congratulations to Leo on becoming a finalist in the BBC Make a Difference Young Hero Award.

Leo received a transplant to treat his leukaemia, and by raising awareness of the need for donors, inspired hundreds of people to join the stem cell register. Five other people also found matches. 💛

His family are now passionate about raising awareness of the need for stem cell donors. About 2,000 people in the UK are waiting for a match, but only 7% of people are signed up to the stem cell register, according to DKMS UK.

As Leo's dad says: "We thought it was important to let people know that it's not a big drill in the hip anymore, it's like donating blood."

Well done, Leo. As his mum says: "not many people can say they've helped save five people's lives."

For his efforts, Leo Sproson is nominated for a BBC Make a Difference award.

🎉 Great news for cell therapy and cancer care!

We’re thrilled to see a new multi-centre study featured in the EBMT Journal Highlights, led by Simon M. Krauß alongside teams from Universitätsklinikum Leipzig, Charité Berlin, and LMU Klinikum München.

The team tackled a major question in advanced medicine: Does Clonal Hematopoiesis (CH)—a common genetic mutation in cancer patients—hinder our ability to successfully manufacture lifesaving CAR T-cells?

The quick answer? Not at all! 🧬✨

Here are the key takeaways from the paper:

Mutations are common: Nearly half (47%) of heavily pre-treated cancer patients carried these genetic mutations in their starting cell material.

Manufacturing is unaffected: Despite how common they are, these mutations had zero impact on manufacturing success. They didn't cause production cancellations, quality issues, or cell growth failures.

What this means for us at Biovault Technical:

As an MHRA and HTA-accredited facility for cellular processing and storage, these findings offer two huge operational insights for our team:

No screening bottlenecks: Facilities don't need to waste precious time or resources pre-screening donor cells for these specific mutations before production begins.

Focus on process quality: Manufacturing failures are driven by handling techniques, cell counts, or processing conditions—not a patient's underlying genetic mutations.

This reinforces our core mission: maintaining gold-standard cryopreservation and laboratory processing for every single sample that comes through our doors. 🧪🧫

✨ The journey of a stem cell, from donor to patient.

Every stem cell begins with an extraordinary act of generosity. But before it can help save a life, it embarks on a carefully controlled journey with no margin for error.

From collection and processing to cryopreservation, storage, transport and clinical release, every step must preserve the identity, integrity and viability of the cells. That's why robust chain-of-custody and chain-of-identity procedures are so critical. They ensure the right cells reach the right patient, safely and with complete traceability.

At Biovault Technical, these standards underpin everything we do. Through HTA licensing, JACIE accreditation and ISBT 128-compliant processes, we help safeguard every cellular therapy throughout its journey, giving clinicians confidence and patients the best possible opportunity for successful treatment.
