Plymouth Highbury Trust

Plymouth Highbury Trust Plymouth Highbury Trust was formed in 1956 under the name of Plymouth Mencap Society and was then affiliated to National Mencap.

πŸ”ΉοΈA charity offering a diverse range of services to adults with learning disabilities in Plymouth.
πŸ”ΉοΈEnsuring those individuals gain the support, care, experiences & the opportunity to live their lives to the full. The thirty founding members were parents of children with a learning disability. The Society started out as a self-help and support group striving to improve the services available for

people with a learning disability living in the City of Plymouth. The Society's membership increased considerably over the ensuing years and a lasting fellowship developed between members that still stands today. In October 2005 the decision was reached to de-affiliate from National Mencap. We took this opportunity to change our name to the Plymouth Highbury Trust and along with many other Charities we also became a Company Limited by Guarantee. The Trust is now an independent Charity, which is governed by both Charity and Company Law and the Chairperson and the Committee are now Directors of the Trust. The Directors of Plymouth Highbury Trust regularly hold Board Meetings each month to discuss matters concerning the Trust and the Services we provide. Our organisation currently employs a staff team in excess of 50+ people, who along with our 70 Volunteers provide a diverse range of quality services and social events for over 500 people with a learning disability living in the City of Plymouth.

We will be up at 2:45am and meeting at 3:45am to set off πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« Some of us will be walking as many miles as we can, while others are taking on the full 34-mile challenge from sunrise to sunset!

If you would like to support us, please consider sponsoring us via the link in our bio. Every donation will help keep us motivated when the miles get tough! And saying it will encourage us to walk that extra mile is definitely no exaggeration!

Thank you so much for your support. Every contribution, big or small, will make a big difference.

Everyone deserves to feel connected, valued, and part of their community.

For many adults with learning disabilities, opportunities to socialise and build friendships can be limited. That's why our Social Clubs are so important.

Our Orbit Club and Evening Highbury Club provide safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces where people can have fun, make friends, build confidence, and enjoy experiences together.

These sessions take place twice a week and create friendships, reduce isolation, and help people feel a true sense of belonging.

As costs continue to rise, we are working hard to keep our clubs affordable and accessible for everyone. We don't want increasing costs to become a barrier for the people who rely on these opportunities.

You can help make a difference. Whether you donate, take on a fundraising challenge, become a sponsor, or simply share this post, your support helps us continue providing these valued social clubs.

Together, we can ensure adults with learning disabilities have a place where they feel welcome, connected, and valued.

It's Learning Disability Week, organised by Mencap.

At Plymouth Highbury Trust, our vision is to work alongside people with learning disabilities and their support networks throughout their lives, challenging perceptions and expanding possibilities together. That's why the theme, Do You See Me?, resonates so strongly with us.

Not only do we provide care and support for the people who use our services but we advocate for their rights, amplify their voices, and strive to ensure they feel seen, valued, and included.

Adults with learning disabilities are often an overlooked minority group, yet they deserve the same opportunities, experiences, support, and quality of life as everyone else. Creating those opportunities and championing inclusion is at the heart of everything we do at Plymouth Highbury Trust.

Just weeks after completing the Plymouth Half Marathon, Joey is taking on another half marathon this weekend, and continuing raising funds for Plymouth Highbury Trust.

We are incredibly grateful for Joey's dedication and support. Not only is he raising vital funds to help us continue supporting adults with learning disabilities, but he is also helping to raise awareness about the work we do and the difference it makes in people's lives.

Thank you, Joey, for going the extra mile for Plymouth Highbury Trust!

Our Community Support Service recently welcomed Sam Southern, a PhD researcher from University of Plymouth. Sam is currently leading a community heritage project called Swinging the Lamp: Stories of the Sea, which aims to capture and celebrate people’s stories, memories, and connections to Plymouth Sound.

The project invites communities across Plymouth Sound to share what the sea means to them, what they value, and their hopes for the future. The research will help inform the heritage narrative of Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and will also contribute to future exhibitions.

Our clients had a wonderful time taking part in the session. They thoroughly enjoyed getting creative, sharing their experiences, and using their imaginations to explore their connections with the sea.
