Plymouth Highbury Trust

Plymouth Highbury Trust Plymouth Highbury Trust was formed in 1956 under the name of Plymouth Mencap Society and was then affiliated to National Mencap.

🔹️A charity offering a diverse range of services to adults with learning disabilities in Plymouth.
🔹️Ensuring those individuals gain the support, care, experiences & the opportunity to live their lives to the full. The thirty founding members were parents of children with a learning disability. The Society started out as a self-help and support group striving to improve the services available for

people with a learning disability living in the City of Plymouth. The Society's membership increased considerably over the ensuing years and a lasting fellowship developed between members that still stands today. In October 2005 the decision was reached to de-affiliate from National Mencap. We took this opportunity to change our name to the Plymouth Highbury Trust and along with many other Charities we also became a Company Limited by Guarantee. The Trust is now an independent Charity, which is governed by both Charity and Company Law and the Chairperson and the Committee are now Directors of the Trust. The Directors of Plymouth Highbury Trust regularly hold Board Meetings each month to discuss matters concerning the Trust and the Services we provide. Our organisation currently employs a staff team in excess of 50+ people, who along with our 70 Volunteers provide a diverse range of quality services and social events for over 500 people with a learning disability living in the City of Plymouth.

🌿 Sensory Garden Appeal 🌿

Our accessible garden is now complete! 🎉 Our clients and residents can enjoy a safe, welcoming and accessible outdoor space throughout the year. 😄

But the hard work doesn’t stop there! We are now raising funds to purchase brand-new sensory equipment to make our garden even more special and enjoyable for everyone, including the community - with the plan to allow organisations and families, who will benefit from it's use, have access to the garden on specific days of the week.

We have already received some amazing funding, which we can't wait to share more about with you (and celebrate!) but we need to raise a little more before we can start ordering and installing the sensory equipment.

Can you help us?

If you would like to support our appeal, please consider making a donation and adding ‘garden’ in the description. You could also set up your own fundraising event or challenge - and we will be here to support you every step of the way! We are also welcoming organisations to sponser a piece of equipment, with their name and a message of thanks from us on the equipment they choose.

📩 Send us a message if you would like to get involved.

Every donation, fundraiser and share can help us create a wonderful sensory garden for our clients, residents and community 😀

This time last week, we were celebrating 70 years of Plymouth Highbury Trust at our Summer Coffee Morning 🎉

And what a fantastic day it was! We were joined by so many lovely people, with plenty to enjoy 🙂☀️

We had the most delicious cakes, lovingly made by one of our very own staff members, amazing music and singing from Plymouth Music Zone, as well as some very special alpaca guests from Lakemoor Alpacas

The Deputy Lord Mayor, Angela Penrose, so kindly joined us for the celebration, taking the time to chat with guests and learn more about the work we do.

Our CEO also had the pleasure of presenting two of our longest-serving Trustees with flowers to say thank you for their dedication and support over the years ❤️ Their commitment and involvement with Highbury have contributed so much to the charity we are today, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they have given.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, to all the organisations who generously donated raffle prizes, to all the wonderful staff who helped make sure the day ran smoothly, to Plymouth Post for sharing our story and taking photos and, of course, to our amazing service users for helping to make the day so special.

We are delighted to share that we raised over £900 from the cake sale and raffle... the que for the cakes was endless and the team on raffle duty were beyond busy! Thank you to the team who worked so hard 🤗

We are incredibly proud to have been doing what we do for 70 years - supporting people with learning disabilities to access the care, experiences and opportunities they need to live life to the full.

Here’s to celebrating 70 years of making a difference, and to many more years to come!
