Sometimes life gets so loud and so full that we don’t even realise how wound up we are until we finally stop.

That’s what reflexology can feel like - a chance to slow down, take a breath, and let your whole system catch up with you.

Not fixing everything in one go, just giving your body and mind a moment to come back to themselves.

The lymphatic system is one of the body's most important - and often overlooked - networks. Working alongside the circulatory and immune systems, it helps transport lymph fluid throughout the body, supports immune function, and plays a role in removing cellular waste and excess fluid from tissues.

Unlike the heart, which continuously pumps blood around the body, the lymphatic system relies largely on movement to keep fluid flowing. That's why habits such as regular exercise, staying hydrated, deep breathing, adequate sleep, and avoiding prolonged periods of sitting can all help support healthy lymphatic function.

Stress can also influence how efficiently our bodies function as a whole. When we're constantly in "fight or flight" mode, processes related to rest, recovery, and maintenance may take a back seat. This is where reflexology may play a supportive role.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that encourages deep relaxation and helps support nervous system balance. By promoting a state of calm and supporting circulation, reflexology may help create favourable conditions for the body's natural regulatory processes, including those involved in lymphatic health.

While reflexology should not be considered a treatment for lymphatic conditions, many people choose it as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing, alongside healthy lifestyle habits that support circulation, recovery, and overall balance.

Healthy lymphatic function isn't about quick fixes or detoxes. It's about supporting the body's remarkable ability to maintain itself, day after day.

PMS can show up in so many different ways - physically, emotionally and mentally.

A systematic review and meta-analysis looked at whether reflexology may have an effect on PMS symptoms by reviewing 9 studies involving 475 participants.

The review found that reflexology was associated with a reduction in overall PMS severity compared with control groups. It also reported improvements in both somatic symptoms - such as physical discomfort - and psychological symptoms, including mood-related symptoms. The researchers also noted that longer reflexology sessions appeared to be linked with stronger effects.

As always, research should be read with care. PMS can be complex, and reflexology is not a replacement for medical advice or treatment. But this review adds to the growing conversation around reflexology as a supportive, non-pharmacological approach for women experiencing cyclical premenstrual symptoms.

In our weekly reflexology research post, we spotlight this week how reflexology can help with the fatigue/exhaustion experienced by patients with multiple sclerosis. The seven studies (six randomized controlled trials and one quasi-experimental study) totaled over 430 participants. In six of them, the findings showed that foot reflexology significantly reduced this fatigue. Read more: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39960275.
