What is Bowen Therapy and how did it begin?

What happens during Bowen Therapy?
• The practitioner uses gentle, light rolling moves over muscles and connective tissue
• The moves are made at carefully selected points around the body
• Short spaces or breaks are left between each sequence of moves
• These pauses allow the body and brain time to communicate, process the information and begin responding
• The treatment is gentle, with no forceful manipulation or cracking

Where did Bowen Therapy come from?
• Bowen Therapy was developed by Thomas “Tom” Bowen in Geelong, Australia, during the 1950s
• Tom Bowen was self-taught, developing his approach through observation and practical experience
• A keen sportsman, he worked with injured footballers, athletes and workers experiencing pain and injury
• Historical accounts describe him developing particular procedures to help his wife Jessie, who experienced severe asthma
• He gradually became known for his work and eventually ran a very busy clinic
• After his death in 1982, his approach was documented and taught, allowing Bowen Therapy to spread around the world

Today, Bowen Therapy continues to offer a gentle approach for people experiencing back pain, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica and other muscular or joint difficulties.

How can counselling help with anxiety?
Anxiety can affect far more than your thoughts. It may leave you feeling tense, restless, overwhelmed or unable to switch off. You might find yourself avoiding situations, questioning your decisions or worrying about what could go wrong.
Counselling provides a calm, confidential space where you can:
• Explore what may be causing or maintaining your anxiety
• Recognise anxious thoughts, patterns and triggers
• Understand physical symptoms such as tension or a racing heart
• Find healthier ways to manage worry and overwhelm
• Build confidence in situations you may have started avoiding
• Feel more in control of your thoughts and emotional responses
• Develop greater self-understanding and find a way forward
I offer one-to-one anxiety counselling for adults in Plymouth, with face-to-face and online appointments available.

Did you know Bowen Technique is used for much more than just back pain?

People seek Bowen for a surprisingly wide range of conditions and concerns, including:

✔ Back pain & sciatica
✔ Neck pain & headaches
✔ Shoulder pain & frozen shoulder
✔ Hip, knee, foot & ankle pain
✔ Fibromyalgia & arthritis-related stiffness
✔ Sports injuries & muscle tension
✔ Stress, anxiety & burnout
✔ Sleep difficulties
✔ Asthma & breathing difficulties
✔ Sinus congestion & hay fever
✔ Digestive discomfort & bloating
✔ Jaw tension (TMJ)
✔ Recovery from injury and surgery
✔ General mobility and flexibility concerns

Bowen Technique is a gentle, hands-on therapy that works with the body's muscles, fascia and nervous system. There is no forceful manipulation or deep pressure, just precise moves and pauses that give your body time to respond.

One of my favourite things about Bowen is that clients often leave saying they feel calmer, lighter and more comfortable in their bodies.

If you've ever wondered whether Bowen could help you, I'd love to hear from you.

I'm delighted to share that I am now a fully qualified Bowen Practitioner!

A couple of weekends ago, after my flight was cancelled, I swapped the airport for a six-hour drive to Blackburn to sit my written and practical Bowen exams. It certainly wasn't the journey I'd planned, but I'm so pleased to say that all the hard work was worth it... I passed!

Bowen is a gentle hands-on therapy that aims to encourage the body to release tension, reduce pain and restore balance. People often choose Bowen for problems such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, hip pain, knee pain, headaches and migraines, as well as general muscular aches and stiffness.

One of the things I love most about Bowen is how gentle it is. Rather than forcing the body, it uses precise, light movements with pauses between them, allowing your body time to respond in its own way.

To celebrate qualifying, I'm offering an introductory Bowen appointment for £40 instead of £50 until 31st July.

Appointments are available at Plymouth Wellbeing Centre. Check out my available appointments: https://invest-in-you.co.uk/body-work-and-holistic-appointments/

After surgery, it’s very common for areas to feel tight, swollen or uncomfortable.
Whether you’ve had a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast uplift or a mummy makeover, your body is working hard to heal, and that healing doesn’t just happen on the surface.
Even in the early stages, the tissue underneath can feel:
• tight
• heavy or swollen
• sensitive or restricted

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can be introduced from early on (often from around 5 days post-surgery) to gently support your body through this stage.
It can help to:
• reduce swelling and fluid build-up
• ease discomfort
• support the healing process

Alongside this, I also use very gentle scar tissue work (Myofascial Release) to support the area as it heals, helping reduce that feeling of tightness and allowing the tissue to settle more comfortably.

This is a calm, gentle approach.
No force. Just working with your body to help it to heal.

If you’re preparing for surgery, or already in recovery and things feel tight or swollen, this is something that can be supported.

What your counsellor brings to the session (that you might not realise)

Have you ever felt like you should be able to talk things through with someone… but still feel stuck?

Talking helps, but counselling offers something different.
It’s a space that is completely yours.
No judgement. No interruptions. No pressure to be anything other than how you are.
A place where you can say things out loud that you might not feel able to say anywhere else.

Alongside this, your counsellor brings experience and professional skills to gently help you: make sense of what you’re feeling
• understand your responses and reactions
• begin to find a way forward that feels right for you

There’s also a lot happening behind the scenes.
Ongoing training, regular supervision, and a commitment to working safely and ethically, all there to support you in the best way possible.

And sometimes, just understanding why you feel the way you do can bring a real sense of relief.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you come to counselling.
You just need a place to start.
