Continuity of care Vs conveyor belt care

Knowing your midwife

She's the one who comes to see you in your home

So that when she arrives to care for you in labour, there is no resistance, no worry about your birth plan not being respected. She knows you and she only makes you feel safer to go deeper in to labour land and through that portal of birth 🍥

She is the same familiar pair of hands that care for you and your baby for a full month after your baby is earthside.

This Vs

Seeing 6 different midwives in a clinic during your pregnancy

Unknown and unfamiliar faces on labour day or perhaps a change in birth location because of staff shortages

Clinic based postnatal care.

Perfunctory, functional but not with that same feeling.

The first example is called continuity of care. It is proven through huge research studies to improve outcomes for mother and baby time and again and improves almost every measurable outcome in maternity care.

It does exist in pockets of the NHS but you may have to search for it and request it, and you may have a postcode lottery.

I work like this because relationship based care means safety. For you. For your baby. It means you feel safe to make choices that feel right for you and to make them in a way where you feel held and supported.

Long listen ✨

I get asked a lot why anyone would book an independent midwife when they can access care for free with the NHS

My care is very much adjacent to and integrated with to keep you and your baby safe.

But safety is more than just accessing the hospital services. It's knowing, trusting and walking a journey with someone who knows you as the unique and special person you are and helping you navigate exactly what's right for you.

And do you know what? It works. It's often transformational for families.

Holistic care should feel like this

We practise our skills and drills regularly to provide the safest possible birth experience for you and your baby.

Rehearsing essential skills regularly means that if an unexpected or emergent situation happens we can deal with it calmly and skillfully.

We practise birth scenarios such as breech as well as emergency scenarios such as heavy bleeding after birth. This helps our brains to switch in to automatic mode if/when we need to. Calmly managed situations mean less trauma and safer care.

We treat birth with the reverence it deserves. Most of the time birth just happens, but having a skilled homebirth midwife present means that if you do encounter any challenges, we are ready to keep you and your baby safe.

If you have any questions about our skills then ask away!

Yes I do sometimes have wealthy clients approach me, but most of my clients sit firmly in the working professionals category where they are choosing to invest in a different way of experiencing maternity care..

They are choosing
Alignment
Continuity of care
Provision of evidence based care including homebirth
Nourishing postnatal care
TIME

The big questions to ask about your NHS provider?

What are their rates of

Caesarean birth (planned and emergency)
Induction of labour
Instrumental birth
Number of homebirths and birth centre births supported and their transfer rates
How often is the homebirth service suspended and women asked to attend the local unit instead
What does postnatal care provision look like - will I need to leave my home for appointments even if I have had a caesarean birth

If you are looking for care that gives you access to the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, access to home birth with a midwife who has been supporting homebirths for over 10 years and is an expert in physiological birth.
A midwife that prioritises time, getting to know you and what you need - because she knows this means safety.

Then get in touch

Because investing in your maternity journey is bigger than just 10 months of care. It is life altering, life affirming & empowering.
