With most children heading back to school over the next few days, it feels like an important time to talk about why, for some children, getting through the school gates can feel impossible.

One of the reasons I wanted to write this article is because I've never been particularly comfortable with the phrase ‘school refusal’. It suggests choice. It can sound as though a child has simply decided they don't want to go to school, almost as if they're being stubborn or difficult.

In reality, that couldn't be further from the truth for many of the families I meet.

Most of these children aren't refusing school.

They're struggling to cope with it.

Read more here ….

When a child struggles to attend school, it's often anxiety rather than defiance. Understand school avoidance and how to support your child with confidence.

Ever have one of those days where you get EVERYTHING done?

Emails answered. Jobs ticked off. House sorted. You're basically unstoppable.

And then the next day, absolutely nothing

You know what needs doing. You might even spend most of the day thinking about what needs doing. But actually starting any of it feels ridiculously difficult.

And that's often when the self-criticism starts.

'Why am I so lazy?'
'Why can't I just get on with things?'
'I managed it yesterday, so what's wrong with me today?'

The thing is, productivity isn't simply about how motivated or disciplined you are.

Stress, overwhelm, anxiety, poor sleep, mental load, confidence and the way our brains manage attention and executive functioning can all affect how easily we get started and keep going.

Sometimes you're not lacking motivation at all.

Your brain's just got far too many tabs open.

And once we stop treating every unproductive day as evidence that there's something wrong with us, it becomes much easier to understand what's actually getting in the way and do something about it.

If this sounds familiar, you're definitely not alone

You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what the problem is.

Sometimes 'I just know I don't feel like I'm functioning at my best' is more than enough to start with.

I’ve talked about the slot machine analogy in quite a few sessions over the years, so when I came across this clip I thought it was worth sharing.

It’s such a simple way of looking at things, but one that can really stick with you and I think Katherine Ryan delivers it so well.

Definitely worth a watch

Hello! I’ve noticed quite a few new faces appearing on here recently, so I thought I should probably introduce myself properly!

I’m Lyanne, the person behind MyndTrain

I’m a clinical hypnotherapist based on the ridgeway in Plympton (where I’ve lived my whole life!) I work with adults, teenagers and children supporting them with all sorts! Anxiety, confidence, overthinking, stress, fears and phobias, habits, sleep, neurodivergence… and sometimes simply that feeling of knowing something needs to change but not really knowing where to start.

I’m also a mum to two older teenagers, so when I talk about the chaos of teenage life, neurodivergence, school pressures and parenting, I’m definitely not speaking purely from a textbook 🤦‍♀️

Alongside running MyndTrain, I’m in year 5/6 of my Forensic Psychology degree. I’m fascinated by people, why our brains do the things they do and, most importantly, how much capacity we actually have to change. When I’m not in the practice you will usually find me playing taxi for my children and their friends, or joining in the chants at the Devonport end at Plymouth Argyle 💚

My approach is very much human first. You won’t be judged, analysed or expected to walk into my room and immediately tell me your deepest darkest secrets. There’s usually plenty of chatting, probably some laughing, and absolutely no expectation that you need to have the right words for how you’re feeling.

I set MyndTrain up because I genuinely love helping people realise that they’re far more capable than they think they are. Seeing someone come back a few weeks later doing something they previously thought they couldn’t do will never get old.

So if you’re new here, hello and welcome 💙

And if you’ve been here for ages… thank you for sticking around, liking things, sharing posts, recommending me and generally helping MyndTrain grow. It means more than you probably realise.

I can see that there has been a lot of conversation about ADHD following last night’s Channel 4 programme, 'The Great ADHD Myth?'

I haven’t watched it yet, so I’m not going to comment directly on the programme itself. However, the discussion it has created feels very relevant to an article I recently wrote.

Has ADHD become a trend, or are we finally becoming better at recognising something that has always been there?
Greater awareness doesn’t make ADHD fashionable, and increased diagnosis doesn’t automatically mean overdiagnosis. For many people, particularly adults who have spent years wondering why everyday life seems to require so much effort, recognition can bring enormous relief.

Feel free to take a look here...

Why does it feel like everyone has ADHD? Discover why awareness is growing, what ADHD really is, and how hypnotherapy can support the emotional challenges that often accompany it.

Had a gorgeous time in Santorini and then straight back into a very busy couple of days in the practice! 🇬🇷

It really is such a beautiful place and I’ve come back tanned and full of feta, ready to get stuck into providing the best support!

My diary is massively stacked out daily right through to next Sunday, which is always lovely (and definitely one way to get over the post-holiday blues 😂).

My next availability is from 24th August for both initial consultations and sessions.

It’s genuinely lovely to be back in the practice, catching up with familiar faces and meeting some new ones too.

If you’ve been thinking about booking in, feel free to drop me a message or book through the website.

A year on, I’ve finally received my certificate for my diploma of higher education in psychology.

I’m now a year away from completing my forensic psychology degree .. 6 years in the making 🥱

It’s definitely been a marathon rather than a sprint, but I’m looking forward to crossing that finish line.

I made this today!

We spend so much time talking about looking after our minds, but doing something creative is one of the easiest ways to switch off for a while. I may have found a new hobby!

Your brain doesn’t permanently ‘learn calm’

It learns whatever you repeat.

Stress can quietly rebuild old neural pathways without you even noticing.

That’s why so many of my existing clients book the occasional top-up session.

Not because they’ve failed…

Because they’re maintaining all the progress they’ve worked so hard for.

If you’re due for a little boost, book your session by following the link below 👇

These are the feelings so many people deal with everyday, and it is hard for them to reach out and talk about it because it's always impossible to explain.

So be that friend or loved one who takes the time to notice but doesn't push for answers.

There's not always an explanation.
