warning: may contain an unpopular opinion ⚠️
This video came up on my feed today and I couldn’t stop thinking about the bigger picture.
As someone who has worked in nurseries, supported children with SEND, taught in a secondary school and now holds a Master’s degree in Human Nutrition, three concerns immediately came to mind:
1️⃣ Children’s wellbeing is complex and influenced by far more than what’s inside a supplement.
2️⃣ Many families are struggling to access the foundations of health, from nutritious food to mental health support - let alone a supplement at 50p per gummy!
3️⃣ The wellness industry continues to grow by convincing us that more and more aspects of life require a product.
To be absolutely clear, I’m not against supplements.
Supplements can absolutely have a place and, in some situations, be incredibly beneficial. I take some myself and recommend them to my clients too.
BUT they should be used in addition to a healthy, balanced diet and wider wellbeing support - not as a substitute for them.
What also concerns me is the position many parents find themselves in. If your child is struggling, overwhelmed, anxious or finding life difficult, you’ll naturally want to do EVERYTHING you can to help.
I think many parents are desperate for answers, support and reassurance right now.
And that’s why I believe we need to be particularly careful about the messages we send and the solutions we promote.
This isn’t an attack on one brand or even supplements themselves.
But it IS a conversation about children’s wellbeing, the commercialisation of health and where we’re directing parents’ attention, hope and money.
There are so many other angles we could discuss too:
🧠 Mental health support
📱 Social media
💷 Cost of living
🍎 Nutrient deficiencies
🏥 NHS waiting times
📰 Constant exposure to distressing news
I’m always interested in hearing different perspectives - especially on this one.
