THE WORLD IS BETTER WHEN WE'RE INCLUDED!
Next week sees the start of July, and with it, disability pride month.
With this in mind, I wanted to share a bit about me, for those who don’t know.
Hello! My name is Brandon Hulcoop. I'm completely blind, a disability advocate, sight loss ambassador, founder of All Things Dotty, and founder of the UK Sight Loss Collective.
I was born with a visual impairment and have never experienced sight. Despite that, I've built a business, won national awards, met his Majesty the King, campaigned for change, worked in multiple roles, and helped hundreds of people access information through Braille, large print, audio and tactile formats.
My story isn't really about blindness.
It's about what happens when disabled people are given the opportunity to thrive.
Too often, disability is viewed through the lens of limitation. Yet across the UK, millions of disabled people are studying, working, volunteering, running businesses, raising families and making valuable contributions to their communities every day. The real challenge is not our disability, but the barriers that prevent us from participating fully in society.
Through All Things Dotty, I work to make information accessible for people with sight loss. Through the UK Sight Loss Collective, I work alongside visually impaired people from across the country to campaign for better access to education, healthcare, employment, transport and public spaces.
We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for equal access, equal opportunities and the chance to reach our full potential.
Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate achievement, challenge misconceptions and highlight the positive impact disabled people have on society. The world is better when disabled people are included in classrooms, workplaces, community groups, public life and decision-making.
So now I have a challenge for you all. If you have a disability, or you know somebody with a disability… List 3 things that you’re proud of in the comments below. Because Disability Pride month is the time to sing from the rooftops, talk about your achievements big or small.
Ready?
Who’s going first…?
