Built in 1833 by Miss Rachel Howard the school has been central to village life for nearly 200 years. Built of Ackworth sandstone, at a cost of £450, teaching originally focussed on the three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic! Within the school grounds is a Plymouth Brethren burial ground. Rachel's father Luke Howard was an amateur meteorologist and is famous for naming the clouds. He was a Qua

ker, later converting to the Plymouth Brethren, and became a pharmacist by profession. In approximately the year 1797 he then went into partnership with William Allen to form the pharmaceutical company of Allen and Howard in London. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821 and spent the years 1824 to 1852 in Ackworth, Yorkshire.

🌿🌼 What a wonderful day Year 2 had at RHS Harlow Carr!

The children spent the day exploring a range of habitats, including the gardens, grassland and woodland, discovering more about the natural world around them. They even planted their own wildflower seeds to bring back to school and nurture.

Throughout the visit, the children demonstrated excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and curiosity. They were a real credit to Ackworth Howard and represented the school brilliantly.

🎵🎸 A huge well done to Year 3, who performed brilliantly at this afternoon’s Big Strum ukulele concert at Wakefield Cathedral!

After weeks of dedication, practice and perseverance, the children joined pupils from across the district to perform together in this special musical celebration.

They represented Ackworth Howard wonderfully and should be incredibly proud of their achievement. Well done, Year 3! ⭐👏

📚🚌Yesterday, we welcomed the Schools' Library Service (SLS) Book Bus to school for the very first time. Every child had the opportunity to visit the bus, browse the fantastic selection of books and choose a book to borrow and enjoy at home.

From picture books to exciting chapter books and fascinating non-fiction texts, there was something for everyone. It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm for reading and to watch children excitedly discussing the books they had chosen.

A huge thank you to Gemma and the SLS team for bringing this fantastic resource to our school. We can't wait for the next visit! 📖✨

🏃‍♀️ What a wonderful afternoon we had at Sports Day!

After a week of rain, we were delighted to enjoy a welcome window of dry weather. Year 5 opened the event with an energetic djembe (African drum) performance before children took part in a fantastic afternoon of races, teamwork and sporting spirit.

It was wonderful to see so many families stay for our community social event afterwards, enjoying time together and supporting our fundraising activities.

Days like these are a wonderful reminder of the strong sense of community that exists at Ackworth Howard. Thank you to our staff team, volunteers, vendors, stall holders and everyone who helped make the event such a success.

At Ackworth Howard we believe in nurturing our pupils through their personal development journey to achieve readiness to become global citizens, equipped with the tools for life long living and learning.

We aim to achieve this through interweaving core Christian values; thought-provoking and philosophical questions around local and global issues; dedicated time during class and whole school worship to develop as Global Citizens; a rich Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) curriculum and effective Religious Education lessons.

Each half term we focus on a core Christian value - this half term it is 'SERVICE'. This goes hand in hand with our Global Citizenship thread of 'ASPIRATIONS', which is further complemented by our PSHE unit 'DON'T FORGET TO LET LOVE IN.' - Learning how important, valued and loved we are.

🌍✨ Bringing RE to Life! ✨🌍

Children across school recently enjoyed a fantastic series of RE workshops delivered by RE On Demand.

Reception explored Hinduism and created their own shrines, Year 2 consolidated their learning about Islam through the exploration of artefacts, Year 4 developed their understanding of what it means to be a Hindu in Britain today, and Year 5 revisited previous learning as they prepared for their final unit on what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today.

These hands-on experiences help children deepen their understanding of different faiths, cultures and communities, bringing classroom learning to life in an engaging and memorable way.
