Great to be part of the Supported Living Event at Sbectrwm, Cardiff on Saturday, where we joined people and organisations from across the sector to help raise awareness of accommodation and support options for individuals with additional needs exploring more independent living.

A special thank you to Anthony, who shared his personal experience of living in a long-term Shared Lives arrangement. His honest and inspiring insights prompted thoughtful questions from the audience and highlighted the positive impact Shared Lives can have in helping people live independently, confidently and as part of their community.

Together, we were proud to answer questions and showcase the different pathways available to support people in finding the right home and support for their future.

When Cat turned 18, she faced the possibility of leaving her foster family, the only stable home she’d known, and moving into a hostel.

Instead, through Shared Lives, she was able to stay with the carers who had become family — continuing to build her confidence, independence and future.

Today, Cat is thriving. 💛

She’s studying childcare full time, working freelance as an Interview Assistant and Photographer for Ategi, and pursuing her passion for photography — something she discovered thanks to the encouragement of her carers, Rachael and Owain.

“Shared Lives means a lot to me. It’s given me the support and independence I need to be a normal adult with my disability.”

As we recognise Foster Care Fortnight, Cat’s story is a reminder that support doesn’t stop at 18. With the right care, people can continue to grow, belong and thrive.

“Shared Lives is more like a family... I’m not just an adult with a disability — I’m a sister, I’m a daughter and an auntie.”

Could you support someone to live a more independent and fulfilling life through Shared Lives?

“Care doesn’t only happen on wards or in clinics. Sometimes, it happens around a kitchen table.”

This International Nurses Day, we’re celebrating the compassion, dedication and human connection that nurses bring to people’s lives every day.

For Reetesh, a qualified mental health nurse and NHS bed manager, those values extend far beyond the ward.

Alongside his NHS career, Reetesh and his family are also Shared Lives carers—supporting adults with learning disabilities and additional needs to live with greater independence, stability and belonging in his family home.

Care doesn’t only happen in hospitals or clinics - Sometimes, it happens around the dinner table, through shared routines, encouragement, and creating a place where someone truly feels at home.

Read more about Reetesh's story "Why I became a Shared Lives carer": https://bit.ly/4u4hbCx

Hear from Reetesh how becoming a Shared Lives carer allowed him to bring his professional skills into his home, creating stability, independence and belonging.
