Emergency First Aid at Work training completed! ❤️

Yesterday I completed my Emergency First Aid at Work training with the British Red Cross at the Durley Dean Hotel in Bournemouth.

It was a great course and very professionally taught. A big thank you to Connor for being such a brilliant teacher!

With just 8 people on the course, there was plenty of time to practise CPR and using an AED defibrillator, which was really useful for building confidence and making the practical skills feel much more familiar.

As a Chartered Physiotherapist and physiotherapist-led Pilates teacher, keeping my emergency first aid skills up to date is important to me — and it’s reassuring for both me and my clients to know that I’m prepared should an emergency ever happen.

Hopefully I’ll never need to use these skills, but it’s definitely good to be prepared! 🙌

Physiotherapist-led Pilates is back! 🧘‍♀️

My Autumn Pilates courses started back today, and it was lovely to be back teaching after the summer break. 💛

This term we’re focusing on spine strength and mobility and we worked on the spine twist in class today.

This clip is from a previous class and shows two ways of doing the exercise:

👉 Assisted spine twist – using the hands to help guide the movement and mobilise the spine.

👉 Spine twist with the Pilates circle – using the circle to add a little assistance and feedback.

The Pilates circle is completely optional. We use it just once during each course, and you can simply use your hands instead.

There are still a few spaces available in my classes at St Peter’s Church, Ashley Cross.

My Broadstone classes are currently full, but single spaces regularly become available when people are away, so it’s worth checking ClassSwap if you’d like to join a class.

You can start the course at any time — you don’t have to wait for the next course to begin. Just book any available space through ClassSwap from my website.

📍 St Peter’s Church, Ashley Cross

🦴 Why does your spine need both strength AND mobility?

As we get older, it’s easy to focus on either stretching or strengthening.

But your spine needs both.

🤸 Mobility helps you maintain the ability to rotate, bend and extend comfortably.

💪 Strength and control help your muscles support and control your spine as you move and carry out everyday activities.

That’s why my Autumn Pilates Course is focusing on Spine Strength & Mobility.

This exercise is the Spine Twist, which encourages rotation through the thoracic spine — the middle part of your back.

The Pilates circle helps with the technique by keeping the arms controlled and giving you something to gently press into. This encourages the movement to come from the middle of the spine rather than simply turning from the shoulders.

I love this exercise because it can be adapted for different abilities and levels.

I use it:
✨ Sitting on the mat in my Pilates classes
✨ Seated on a chair in my Chairlates classes
✨ Standing in all my classes

As a Chartered Physiotherapist and Pilates teacher, I can adapt exercises whether you’re a beginner, returning to exercise or looking to progress your Pilates.

The aim isn’t simply to stretch your back or make it stronger.

It’s about developing a spine that is strong, mobile and able to move well. 🌿

🦴 ✨ Can Pilates make your spine stronger?
Yes - but it depends how you train.

My focus for the Autumn Physiotherapist led Pilates Course is spine strength and mobility.

Your spine needs both:

💪 Strength — to help support and control your body
🤸 Mobility — to help you move comfortably and confidently

And Pilates gives us lots of ways to work on both.

We can increase the strength challenge using:

• Body weight
• Light hand weights
• Resistance bands
• Pilates circle
• Reformer springs
• Changes in leverage and position
• Increased range of movement
• Progressions of exercises

But there’s an important distinction.

Doing Pilates can make you stronger, but not every Pilates exercise is strength training.

Some exercises will challenge your muscles to produce more force. Others will focus more on muscular endurance, mobility, balance, coordination or movement control.

And we need all of these qualities to help us keep moving well as we get older.

As a Chartered Physiotherapist and Pilates teacher, I love being able to adapt exercises and resistance according to the person in front of me — making an exercise easier, harder or simply different depending on what they need.

So this Autumn, we’ll be working towards a stronger, more mobile spine rather than simply doing more repetitions or chasing the “burn”.
