Most people think cholesterol is the most important marker on a blood test.
Sometimes it isn’t.
Before I even get to cholesterol, I often find myself reviewing:
🩸 HbA1c - provides a longer-term overview of blood sugar regulation over the previous 8–12 weeks and can offer insight into metabolic health and future risk.
⚡ Ferritin - iron storage and oxygen delivery.
🧠 Vitamin B12 - (I ideally prefer Active B12 and MMA, with Homocysteine where appropriate) - neurological function and energy production.
☀️ Vitamin D - immune, hormonal and musculoskeletal health.
🦋 TSH - thyroid signalling and metabolic health.
These markers can often provide valuable clues regarding energy, metabolism, blood sugar balance, thyroid function, methylation concerns, cardiovascular risks, nutritional status and overall health.
Of course, no blood marker should ever be viewed completely in isolation.
The real value comes from understanding the patterns and relationships between biomarkers rather than focusing on a single result.
This is often where the biggest clues are hiding.
Which blood marker has surprised you the most after testing?
