A shaded woodland can often feel 5–15°C cooler than standing in direct sunlight, although the exact difference depends on the weather, tree density, humidity, and wind.

Here’s why woodlands feel so much cooler:

Tree canopy blocks solar radiation
Direct sunlight heats your skin, clothing, and the ground. Dense leaves can block 70–95% of sunlight.

Evapotranspiration
Trees release water vapour through their leaves, which cools the surrounding air naturally — similar to how sweat cools us.

Cooler ground temperatures
Woodland floors stay cooler because they are shaded and often covered with damp soil, moss, or leaf litter rather than heat-retaining concrete or dry grass.

Reduced radiant heat
Even if the air temperature is only slightly lower, you feel much cooler because you’re no longer absorbing intense radiant heat from the sun.

For example:

On a hot 30°C summer day in the UK, a dense woodland may feel more like 18–23°C.

Surface temperatures can be dramatically different:
Sunlit tarmac can exceed 50°C
Woodland ground may stay around 15–25°C

This cooling effect is one reason many dogs appear calmer and less physically stressed walking in woodland compared to open fields in strong sun. The cooler air, shade, softer ground, and richer smells also reduce heat stress and sensory overload.
