“What’s that clicking noise while I’m breastfeeding?”

This is often a sign your baby’s tongue is losing the seal.

Now...the question is “why”?

💕 Is it a tongue-tie?
💕 Are they in the right position to create a secure seal with their tongue and lips?
💕 Are the nerves supplying the tongue and lip muscles being squashed in the neck?
💕 Are the respiratory muscles tight and the suck-swallow-breathe is unco-ordinated?
💕 Are the neck joints / muscles enabling your baby to extend their head to bring the tongue forward?
💕 Is the jaw opening wide enough to take enough breast tissue and create oral stability?
💕 Do you have a fast let-down and your baby is protecting their airway?

Clicking in itself may not actually be a problem at all, but if feeding isn’t how you want it to be or your baby is unsettled and refluxy then seek proper support.

We know after a c-section your focus is 100% on your baby right now, but we need to take care of you.

Simple tasks will be difficult. But it's important you be kind to yourself and your body throughout this process.

💕Connecting with your scar

Scars can hold a lot of emotion, so connecting with this part of your body is so important to healing. This is a very individual experience and this is going to be when you are ready.

💕Touching your scar

By touching the scar you are ‘waking up’ the sensory parts of the brain and helping those neurological connections to reform and encouraging sensation to return, so don’t be surprised if some parts feel numb, there’s plenty of time. By touching and engaging with your scar you are helping to reintegrate that scar into your body to be part of you.

If you’ve had a forceps delivery and wondering if this might be impacting breastfeeding, ask yourself these questions...

💕 Was it difficult to breastfeed immediately after birth?
💕 Does your baby prefer one breast?
💕 Do you need to feed your baby in cradle hold on one breast and football hold on the other?
💕 Does your baby have a preference to look one way?
💕 Do they make a ‘clucking’ sound on the breast?
💕 Do they leak / dribble milk while feeding?
💕 Do they cough / choke / splutter during a feed?
💕 Do they hate tummy time?
💕 Do they have colic, wind or reflux?
💕 Do they have flattening of one side of the back of the head?

If you answered yes to any of these questions forceps could be affecting the feeding.

A full assessment looks at the tongue-tie, latch, position and attachment as well as how you and your baby moves.

Is it really thrush?

Or is two-tone-tongue?

Let’s clear this up– thrush and two-tone tongue are two entirely different things...but so often mixed up.

We often hear babies (and mums) have been medicated for thrush unnecessarily.

💡When babies can’t lift the back of their tongue to the palate, or if they have a high palate, the cells on the back of the tongue stay longer than the ones at the front. Milk collects in these ‘bristles’ and the back of the tongue appears white.

💡 Pseudoepethilisation (or two-tone-tongue) does not appear on the cheeks, gums or lips, it isn’t painful and won’t respond to medication.

If you and your baby are being treated for thrush and it’s not improving, get a full feeding assessment. EVERYTHING needs to be looked at including positioning, attachment, tongue-tie, feeding reflexes, baby's anatomy.

More research is definitely needed in this area, but we need to look back at your pregnancy and how the tongue formed to understand how this happened.

👅In-utero, the tongue and floor of the mouth are joined.

👅During the first trimester, the tissues naturally dissolve and the tongue lifts to become its own separate structure.

👅A small bit of frenulum remains at the root of the tongue connecting it to the floor of the mouth.

Sometimes, for reasons we don’t fully understand (yet), the tissues don’t dissolve fully and so rather than being connected just at the root, it ends up being connected further along the tongue.

So you may have a 25% tongue tie if the frenulum is still connected that far along the tongue or even 100% tongue-tie if it’s all the way to the tip of the tongue.

💡We know tongue-tie is more common in boys and can be hereditary.

What were you told about the reason for your baby’s tongue-tie?

We know the impact c-sections can have on your body.

💕 “Like my top and bottom don’t connect anymore”
💕 “Nothing - numb”
💕 “My body doesn’t feel strong anymore”

C-sections are MAJOR surgery and we care as much about what is going on underneath as what we can see on the surface.

Fascia is a type of connective tissue which covers muscles, nerves, organs, bones...every structure in the body. In some areas of the body it looks like cobwebs, in others like cling film. When fascia is damaged the pulling effect can be body-wide limiting mobility, elasticity and function.

We very quickly get used to this new ‘normal’ but this leads to an adaptation around the c-section scar rather than integration.

Scar therapy aims to integrate the scar rather than leave you to try and adapt to it.

We have so much respect for mums who have undergone a c-section and we know the lifelong impact not addressing scars can have, which is why we include a free online c-section check in all our packages.

In your online c-section check we will:
💕 Listen to you
💕 Support you
💕 Recommend products to support scar healing
💕 Prepare a bespoke rehab plan
💕 Be there for you

Let us care for you so you can care for your baby.

Stiff neck = Stiff tongue

Sounds a bit weird, huh? But this can be a thing!

👅The tongue is formed of a group of muscles
🧠The nerves tell the muscles what to do
🦴Those nerves travel through the neck

If the neck is stiff, the messages aren’t going to get through to the tongue muscles to tell them to do their thing.

This can affect your baby's ability to feed effectively!
