🐈⬛ Why did black cats become associated with witches?
It's an image we all recognise — the witch and her black cat.
But where did that association actually come from?
For centuries, cats lived alongside people as ordinary household animals, helping to control vermin and sharing people's homes. But during the witch persecutions of early-modern England, animals began appearing in accusations surrounding familiar spirits — supernatural beings supposedly connected to witches.
And here's the part that often gets forgotten…
Familiars weren't always cats.
Historical accounts described them taking many different forms, including dogs, birds, toads and other creatures.
Yet over time, the cat — and particularly the black cat — became increasingly tangled with stories of witchcraft, darkness, superstition and the unknown.
Fear and folklore have a habit of travelling through communities. Stories are repeated, beliefs change, and eventually an ordinary animal can become something symbolic.
But black cats haven't always meant bad luck either. Folklore varies enormously, and in some traditions they've been associated with luck and good fortune.
By the time witches and black cats became familiar figures in popular Halloween imagery, centuries of folklore had already helped create the pairing we recognise today. 🎃🐈⬛
And perhaps that's worth remembering when we see one crossing our path…
Behind all those centuries of stories, superstition and symbolism is still simply a cat. 🖤
So I'm curious…
What did you grow up hearing about black cats — lucky, unlucky, or something else entirely?
