East Kent Mencap We support people with a learning disability in East Kent to live full and valued lives.

At East Kent Mencap, we have created an environment that is safe and supportive for people with a learning disability. We seek to educate people about the misconceptions of living with a learning disability, in turn inspiring awareness, education, compassion and action. removed from our pages. Please note that we will remove the following from our social media accounts:

- Verbal abuse and swearing

"Since attending East Kent Mencap I have made lots of friends and gained so much confidence."

This is Luke's experience of being part of East Kent Mencap.

Having opportunities to meet people, try new activities and be part of a supportive community can make a real difference in the lives of people with a learning disability.

This Learning Disability Week, we're raising £700 to help furnish and equip our new Ashford Hub, creating more opportunities for people to build friendships, develop skills and grow in confidence.

If you'd like to support our appeal, you can donate here: www.justgiving.com/campaign/ekm-ashford

What is a learning disability?

A learning disability affects the way a person learns new things throughout their lifetime.

It can affect the way someone understands information, communicates and carries out everyday activities. Every person with a learning disability is unique and may need different levels of support.

People with a learning disability have the same hopes, interests and ambitions as everyone else. They contribute to their communities, build meaningful relationships, develop new skills and achieve personal goals. However, they can face barriers that make it harder to access opportunities, services and support.

If you'd like to help create more opportunities for people with a learning disability, please consider supporting our fundraiser this week: www.justgiving.com/campaign/ekm-ashford

There are an estimated 2,987 people with a learning disability living in the Ashford district.

Behind every number is a person who deserves friendship, opportunity and the chance to be part of their community.

Our new Ashford Hub will support people to connect with others, take part in activities, learn new skills and build confidence in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

We're raising £700 to help create these opportunities and make the hub a place where people with a learning disability can thrive.

Today marks the start of Learning Disability Week, and we're excited to launch our Ashford Hub Appeal! 🩷

Around 200 babies will be born this week with a learning disability. Many will face barriers, discrimination and fewer opportunities than their peers.

At East Kent Mencap, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to make friends, learn new skills, build confidence and feel part of their community.

That's why we're raising £700 to help create new opportunities for people with a learning disability in Ashford. The funding will help furnish and equip our new community hub with furniture, creative resources, games and wellbeing activities.

Thank you for helping create a community where people with a learning disability feel valued, included and supported to thrive.

As we continue developing our Folkestone Hub, we're delighted to be launching a new programme of free Health and Nature sessions for adults with a learning disability and neurodiverse individuals looking to improve their wellbeing.

The sessions will explore local blue and green spaces, helping people connect with nature, build confidence, make friendships and enjoy time outdoors together in a supportive environment.

On Tuesday we celebrated the wonderful impact GOLD has had over the year on our members. Everybody shared their highlights and Raushan Ara, Mayor of Ramsgate and Leo Britcher, Mayor of Margate came and celebrated with us.

GOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties) has spent over a decade supporting people with a learning difficulty in Thanet to build confidence, gain independence and take part in their communities in ways that work for them. After 11 years, the programme has now come to an end.

While GOLD as a service is ending, its impact continues through the relationships, confidence and independence it has The National Lotteryss the community. GOLD was funded by the The National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund – we have been extremely grateful for the opportunities and impact brought by this funding.

Rosie said “GOLD’s been good for me, I have a dyslexic son and it helps me with him and I have met a load of new friends”

Follow us for more on this story, including the fantastic impact it has made to our members and what we will be doing next.

This is Ellie. Ellie attends our Herne Bay Hub and started going to the gym last year. At first, she didn't know how to use the equipment - but that didn't stop her.

By attending weekly sessions with support, Ellie has built her confidence and skills. Now, as soon as she arrives, she's ready to get into "gym mode". She enjoys mixing up her workouts and spending 10 minutes on each machine.

Ellie says: "I am really proud of how independent I am in the gym. I feel really good after my workout."

We're incredibly proud of Ellie's determination and the progress she has made.
