Top Tip Time!

Snuffle season is upon us, and many will head to the pharmacy to pick up a quick fix.

Before you pay, take a look on the side of the box. You’ll find a number starting “PL ...”
This number is unique to the product. You’ll often hear “All Ibuprofen is the same.” And so it is. One 200mg tablet has the same amount of active ingredient as any other 200mg tablet. They are equivalent.

But ‘Product Licence’ numbers go deeper than this. The two Sudafed boxes on the left of this picture have the same product licence number. That means that they’re not just equivalent to each other, they are exactly the same tablet, from the same production line, from the same conveyor belt. One just came off the line five minutes before the other and got shuffled into the top box, and one came off five minutes later and got shuffled into the bottom box. These are not equivalent, they are the same. The only difference between them is the box that they are packaged in.

So what’s the Boot’s one doing there? The Boot’s one also has the same product license number. That means it is exactly the same tablet. Not just equivalent, but the same product. It just got packaged up differently. It also got priced a lot less.

Before you buy any branded over-the-counter medicine, check its product license number, and see if you can find a generic product, or an own brand with the same product license number. They are exactly the same - not just equivalent, not just the same amount of active ingredient - they are the very same tablet - just in a different box.
