Volunteers' Week is a moment to share how proud we are of our team members, who all regularly commit their time to giving back to the community, expecting nothing in return.

One of our team, James, recently spent time supporting Impact Social Hub, a community-led space in Greater Manchester, on a voluntary basis. A lovely note came in from Gail describing the welcome he received and how warmly the group responded to having him there.

Time given freely is one of the quiet things that keeps communities going. We are proud of the part our team plays in that, in and outside of work.

Even in a high-tech age, handwriting is still an important part of learning, and having difficulty with it can be a real source of frustration for children.

Something as straightforward as finding the right pencil grip can make all the difference. But which one is the right one?

It depends. Different grips suit different stages of development, different hand sizes and different needs.

For younger children, working through palm-grip crayons and then broken crayons can support the natural development of a more refined grasp. As children grow, the choice of grip aid changes, and not every aid suits every child.

This is one of the things we work on with families and with schools. Picking the right tool, at the right time, for the right child.

Have a question about handwriting or fine motor skills? Just one of our handwriting sessions is normally enough to turn things around for the better.

The first week back at school can feel bumpier than expected πŸ˜”

After a half term break, some children settle back into routines easily. Others find it harder. Sleep patterns may have shifted, sensory needs may have changed, and the structure of the school day can feel like a lot all at once.

A few things tend to help in the first few days back. Predictable mornings. A little time outdoors before school where possible. Calm transitions in and out of the building. A familiar regulating activity at the end of the day. None of these need to be elaborate. Small, consistent things tend to do the heavy lifting.

If you think a conversation around giving some structure to your child to help them cope with transitions like these would help your family, our inbox is open. Or, you can call 07759 344 644 or email [email protected] to enquire.

What is the part of your child's school day that needs the most support right now?

A parent called this week to say thank you to Jo and Becky, who have been supporting her child's Occupational Therapy. She had been through a difficult journey trying to access the right therapy services via their local authority, and described our team as knowledgeable, helpful and supportive throughout the whole process.

Working alongside families when support routes have not gone as hoped is some of the most meaningful work we do. Clear Occupational Therapy strategies, good collaboration with the school, and family-centred support can take a lot of the weight off a parent who has been carrying it on their own.
Thank you to the parent who took the time to call. It means a great deal to our team πŸ’š

If your child needs Occupational Therapy support and you would value a conversation, our team is here to help. Call 07759 344 644 or email [email protected].

Here is your sign to remember your movement break πŸ•Ί

Last week, Becky and Emily took the children outside onto the Astro for a long-requested football session. Sunshine, fresh air, and one of our team demonstrating that football is not her forte πŸ˜†

(Important mention - laughter is also an important element for resting the mind!)

Outdoor movement gives children a chance to use their whole body, regulate through running and changing direction, and arrive back at the next activity in a more focused state. It is one of the simplest, most reliable tools for supporting attention and self-regulation.

Movement breaks like this can be built into the day at home too. A short outdoor burst before a quieter task, or after a screen-heavy stretch, can make a meaningful difference.

What is your family's go-to movement break this half term? Tell us in the comments ⬇

Does a morning of lessons leave your child running on empty?

One of our students chose messy play this week as a way to settle and reset. Together we made playdough, and she set about creating space creatures.

What looks like a lovely creative session is also doing something important. The squeezing, rolling and pressing give proprioceptive feedback (calming, grounding input through the body), which can help a child feel more regulated and ready to engage with the next part of their day.

For some children, a sensory activity like this is more than play. It can be the difference between coming home overwhelmed and coming home settled.

Looking for low-fuss half term ideas that support regulation? Our team is here to help. Call 07759 344 644 or email [email protected].

Adult assessments for Occupational Therapy in real-life settings are often where the most useful insights come from. Watching how someone actually manages their morning routine. For example, observing someone getting dressed, making breakfast and navigating the stairs gives a much clearer picture than any tick-box in a clinic room.

It is also where small, practical changes tend to present themselves. A different layout in the bathroom. A rest point halfway through the morning. A tool that quietly removes a daily struggle.

Most of the time, one session is all it takes to give a child the confidence to move forward with their handwriting ✏

Here at Manchester Occupational Therapy Services, our goal is to give all children the tools to progress at school, at home, and with all other aspects of life.

We're holding two days' worth of handwriting sessions this half term at our Stockport offices with Matt, one of our Occupational Therapists, designed to identify any underlying issues that may be complicating your child's handwriting journey, and give you practical advice to help them break any barriers they my have been facing.

These are just Β£75 for the hour, and one is normally enough to make a real difference πŸ’™
