"Is a home hearing test as accurate as a clinic test?"
We get asked this a lot. The honest answer? Yes, for most people.

A qualified audiologist brings calibrated equipment to you and follows the same clinical process they would in a clinic. The key factors are the skill of the audiologist and the quality of the equipment. Not the postcode.

We've written about this properly on the site if you want the full picture, including when a clinic visit might actually be the better choice.

Free hearing tests at home or at a local clinic. HCPC-registered audiologists. No obligation, no hidden costs.

Rechargeable hearing aids that sit completely inside your ear. Until recently, that wasn't really possible.

The Unitron Smile Insera 9 changes that. It's one of the very few custom in-ear hearing aids that offer overnight rechargeability, no batteries to fiddle with, and AI sound processing that automatically adjusts across eight different listening environments.

Two models to consider:
→ The Insera S-R 9 (rechargeable, Bluetooth, custom ITE)
→ The Insera S 10 NW O (non-wireless CIC for maximum discretion)

Both are custom-moulded to your ear by an HCPC-registered audiologist, either at your local clinic or in your own home. Everything's included in the price: your hearing test, fitting, and aftercare for life.

60-day money-back guarantee included.

1 in 6 adults in the UK has hearing loss. Most of them do not realise it yet.

Hearing loss is one of those things that tends to come on so gradually that it is easy to dismiss or explain away. But the sooner it is picked up, the better the outcome tends to be.

On our website, we have put together a full, plain-English guide to the types of hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, and mixed), what causes it, what the signs are, and what treatment looks like.

If you have been wondering whether your hearing has changed, a free hearing test with one of our qualified, independent audiologists is a great place to start.

We can come to you at home, or you can visit one of our 93 clinics across the UK.No obligation. No pressure. Just honest advice.

👂 That muffled, underwater feeling in your ears? It's one of the most common ear complaints in the UK — and one of the most frequently misunderstood.

Most of the time, blocked ears are nothing to worry about. But sometimes, they're telling you something worth listening to.

Here's what could be causing that blocked feeling:

🟡 Earwax build-up — the most common culprit in adults; entirely treatable by a qualified audiologist
🟡 Congestion or a cold — swollen Eustachian tubes can leave you feeling bunged up long after the cold has cleared
🟡 Pressure changes — planes, hills, lifts; usually resolves quickly on its own
🟡 Swimmer's ear — trapped water after swimming or bathing
🟡 A perforated eardrum — worth seeing your GP about, though many heal on their own
🟡 Early hearing loss — a muffled sensation that has lingered for months may not be wax at all

That last one is the one many people miss. Age-related or noise-induced hearing loss can creep up slowly, and blocked ears are often the first sign people notice.

If your ears have felt blocked for more than a few weeks, or you're finding conversations harder to follow, a free hearing test is the simplest next step.

Your diet affects more than your waistline—it's quietly impacting your hearing too.

High blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar don't just affect your heart. They're damaging the delicate blood vessels in your inner ear. People with diabetes are twice as likely to experience hearing loss.

The good news? The same foods that protect your heart also protect your hearing. More fish, vegetables, and whole grains. Less salt and processed food.
What you eat today shapes what you hear tomorrow.

👂 Did you know there are actually FOUR different types of ear infection — and each one can affect your hearing differently?

Most people assume an ear infection means a bit of pain that clears up in a few days. But for some, the hearing loss lingers long after the infection has gone.
Here's what to know:

🔵 Outer ear infection (otitis externa) — often causes muffled hearing and discharge; usually clears once the infection does
🔵 Middle ear infection (otitis media) — very common in adults; can cause pain, pressure, and temporary hearing loss
🔵 Glue ear — thick fluid behind the eardrum; often painless but can affect hearing for weeks or even months
🔵 Inner ear infection (labyrinthitis) — can cause sudden hearing loss, dizziness, and tinnitus; always worth seeing a GP

If your hearing hasn't bounced back after an ear infection, don't just wait and hope. A proper hearing check can make a real difference — and ours are completely free.

Is your hearing loss temporary or permanent? Here's how to tell the difference.

When you notice your hearing isn't quite right, one crucial question matters: can it be reversed? Understanding the difference between temporary and permanent hearing loss affects your treatment options and outcomes – and knowing the signs could save your hearing.

Signs it might be TEMPORARY:
✅ Sudden onset after a concert, flight, or cold
✅ Feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear
✅ Pain or discomfort alongside hearing loss
✅ Affects just one ear
✅ Recent illness or medication changes

Signs it might be PERMANENT:
🔴 Gradual decline over months or years
🔴 Struggling with high-frequency sounds (speech sounds "mumbled")
🔴 Persistent tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
🔴 No obvious triggering event
🔴 Affects both ears, especially if you're over 50

URGENT: Sudden hearing loss in one ear is a medical emergency. Prompt treatment within 72 hours can make the difference between recovery and permanent loss.

The good news? Temporary hearing loss often resolves with proper treatment (removing wax, treating infections).

Permanent hearing loss is highly manageable with modern hearing aids – they're sophisticated, discreet, and genuinely life-changing.

The sooner you address it, the better your brain adapts.

Bottom line: Professional assessment is essential. You can't reliably diagnose yourself, and waiting helps no one. Whether temporary or permanent, there are solutions.

Ever notice a crackling sound in your ear when you swallow, yawn, or chew? You're not imagining it — and you're definitely not alone. 👂

Here's what could be behind it:
*Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) — when the tiny tube connecting your middle ear to your throat doesn't open or close properly, often triggered by a cold, sinusitis, or allergies
*Earwax buildup — especially if you've been using cotton buds (which can actually push wax deeper in)
*A middle ear infection (acute otitis media) — which can cause fluid build-up and that distinctive crackling sensation
*Middle ear myoclonus — a rare condition where tiny muscles in the ear spasm
*TMJ disorder — yes, your jaw joint can affect your ears too!

Most of the time, crackling in the ear is nothing serious and settles on its own. But if it's persistent, worsening, or comes with pain, discharge, or muffled hearing — it's time to speak to your GP. 🩺
