🌼 **What I Wished I Had Known Then** 🌼

Reflecting on my journey, I often think about the pivotal moments that shaped my understanding of my health. Diagnosed with premature ovarian failure (POF) at just 20 years old, known then as the premature menopause. I felt lost and overwhelmed, grappling with changes I didn’t fully understand.

One of the most challenging aspects was the weight gain that accompanied my diagnosis. Low estrogen levels profoundly impacted my body, making it difficult to maintain a healthy weight. I struggled for years, feeling frustrated as though my body was betraying me.

My condition also affected my gastrointestinal system, leading to surgery to remove my sigmoid colon—a painful reminder that my symptoms were not just inconveniences but signals from my body. For years, I fought with the health service, seeking answers for symptoms linked to my early menopause, often feeling lost without support.

Through this journey, I discovered the significant role of cortisol levels in our overall health. Understanding how stress hormones influence bodily functions led me to breathwork, which transformed my life. It taught me to manage stress and connect with my body in a way I had never experienced before, allowing me to reclaim control over my well-being.

Looking back, I wish I had known then about embracing dietary modifications tailored for menopause and the right type of exercise, like strength training and specific yoga poses, became crucial in managing my symptoms. Prioritising stress management and anxiety through breathwork and mindfulness was essential, empowering me to take control of my health.

A common question I receive is whether my monthly training plan includes functional training. This term is currently trending in the fitness world.

Functional training refers to exercises that enhance everyday movements by utilising full joint range and engaging stabilising muscles.

This is the essence of my teaching, encompassing various disciplines like functional yoga, dynamic vinyasa flow, kettlebells, strength training, and more, drawing from over 30 years of experience. I adopt a multidisciplinary approach to health and fitness.

Throughout my years as a personal trainer and yoga teacher, I’ve observed that sticking to a single training method can lead to repetitive injuries and diminished motivation. By combining different practices, we can enhance flexibility, strength, and stability more efficiently.

Ultimately, I focus on teaching how to move the body with proper muscle and joint function for pain free movement.

The accompanying photo shows a client training after two knee replacements. Through a program focused on strength, balance, and flexibility, he is achieving movements he once thought impossible, illustrating the essence of functional training.

Understanding Hypermobility
Hypermobility refers to an increased range of motion in the joints, which can lead to instability and a higher risk of injury. In the case of the elbow, this can manifest as a tendency to hyperextend, putting strain on the surrounding muscles and connective tissues.

The medial head of the triceps is essential for stabilising the elbow, particularly for those with hypermobility. Located on the inner side of the arm, it controls elbow extension, preventing excessive movement that can lead to injury. By effectively engaging during pushing and lifting activities, it ensures smooth motion and protects against joint dislocations.

One great exercise to strengthen the medial head is the tricep kickback. This movement targets the triceps effectively, promoting stability around the elbow joint. Incorporating kickbacks into your routine can enhance joint stability while reducing the risk of strains and sprains.

Strengthening the medial head not only improves your overall function but also supports safer, more effective movement patterns.
