Our Community Curators recently joined artist Aliyah Hussain for a hands-on macramé workshop as part of the creation of her upcoming installation at Touchstones.

Using colourful ropes and learning the traditional “lover’s knot”, each participant created a unique macramé holder that will eventually suspend ceramic pieces within the artwork. The workshop was filled with concentration, creativity and plenty of proud moments as everyone saw their designs take shape.

We can’t wait to see these beautiful collaborative creations installed in the Dining Room ☺️

I’m your friendly neighborhood Dumpling Botanist, and I’m totally obsessed with all things seeds! We have a varied seed collection at Touchstones, and I would like to take a moment to highlight a few specific examples from our archives from the 1920s - 1940s.

Mignonette

Ever heard of a flower called Mignonette? It’s basically the “me” of the garden world - small, sweet, and totally irresistible! It’s smell packs a punch of vanilla, raspberry, and cinnamon. Honestly, if I didn’t smell like savoury goodness, I’d want to smell just like this!

Legend says Napoleon brought seeds from Egypt to his wife, Josephine. She loved it so much she made it the trendiest flower in France!

Pansy Mixed

Just like me, these flowers are meant for the plate! People toss them into salads, float them in drinks, and stick them on cakes. Some even have a sweet, honey-scented filling - err, I mean fragrance!

Did you know their name comes from the French word pensée, which means “thought”? Back in the Victorian Era, if someone gave you a pansy, they were saying they were thinking of you with lots of affection. It’s like a warm, flowery hug!

Stock

Stock flowers have a super strong, sweet-spicy scent that smells just like cloves. Believe it or not, they’re in the Brassica family. That means they’re related to broccoli and cabbage! Basically, they’re the glamorous cousins of the veggie world. If I were a veggie dumpling, we’d be besties!

In the Victorian days, giving someone Stock flowers meant you shared a lasting bond and total contentment. I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it.

You should come down to Dumpling Day to see more seeds from our amazing collection! My fellow colleagues will be there too, ready to chat and share all the seedy details with you!

With just a two-week countdown to Dumpling Day, listen closely, because I’m more than just a tasty bite wrapped in dough. In Ukraine, we varenyky aren’t simply dumplings; we are ritual, symbolism, and a warm hug from home. Long before we ever sat on a fancy restaurant menu, we were shaped by hand in village kitchens, our edges folded tight by grandmothers at tables where whole families gathered.

Today, I’m proud to say we remain a pillar of Ukraine’s identity - a dish that has traveled through centuries without ever losing its soul.

Historians love to argue about my “birth certificate”. While dumpling traditions stretch all across Europe and Asia, some think my ancestors traveled along trade routes from the East. But let me tell you, once I arrived in Ukraine, I became something uniquely my own.

I’ve seen it all. Through wars, famines, and political shifts, I endured. In hard times, I was affordable and filling. In good times, I was the star of the celebration.

During the 20th century, as Ukrainians moved to places like Canada, Australia, and the United States, I packed my bags and went with them. I became an anchor of identity abroad, popping up at community halls and festivals to remind everyone of where they came from.

So, with Dumpling Day almost here, meet me at the table, share a plate, and experience the tradition, comfort, and history folded into every single bite.

Hey everyone! Hinata here! 👋

I’m one of the Dumpling Curators over at Touchstones, and I’ve got a real treat for you today! Grab a tea and get cosy, because we’re looking at a delicious piece of art by the amazing John O’Connor.

Check out this print! It’s an untitled engraving with a gorgeous yellow watercolour wash. It shows a warm country kitchen with a sweet family cat keeping toasty by the stove. Honestly? You can practically feel the warmth through the screen.

John was a painter, printmaker, and illustrator. He was famous for his super playful takes on cosy, countryside life. Born in Leicester, studying art from 1931–34 he studied at the Royal College of Art under masters like Eric Ravilious and John Nash.

From writing books to being a regular at the Royal Academy, his work is now tucked away in fancy spots like the Tate, the British Museum and our very own Touchstones!

Want to see more food-inspired art? Visit Dumpling Day! I’ll be there along with my colleagues to chat about art, food, and everything in between. We can’t wait to answer all your burning questions!

Today we’d like to celebrate the life and art of Tess Jaray, (1937-2026) who sadly passed away this week. Tess Jaray’s ‘Remain’ (pictured) was part of the artist's long-running exploration of space, geometry, and perception in abstract painting.

She described wanting to make paintings that felt like spaces you could "disappear into". In ‘Remain’, the arrangement of lines and colour create a push-pull effect causing your eyes to move in and out of the canvas at the same time, creating spacial tension.

We’re forever grateful for her beautiful contribution to life and to art and her legacy will live on in these paintings that give us space to breathe and take time to reflect on our inner lives.

You may have recently seen various “Dumpling” characters appearing on our social media, using mascots for food advertising is far from a modern trend. In 1941, the British Ministry of Food introduced two iconic characters to encourage the consumption
of homegrown vegetables during the height of Second World War rationing.

Central to the “Dig for Victory” campaign, these figures were known as Dr Carrot and Potato Pete.

Dr Carrot promoted carrots as a vital substitute for rationed sugar. He was also famously used in a propaganda myth suggesting that carrots improved night vision - a clever story designed to hide the British development of secret radar technology from the enemy.

Potato Pete championed the potato as a versatile, easy-to-grow source of energy. He became so popular that he had his own dedicated recipe book and a theme song performed by Betty Driver.

The Ministry of Food leaflets were essential resources, helping the public maintain their nutritional health and boost morale during periods of extreme scarcity. They provided practical advice on improving self-sufficiency, maximizing limited rations and creative
cooking (including recipes for puddings, soups, pickles, and chutneys).

Rationing was officially introduced by Lord Woolton on January 8, 1940. He spearheaded the “Dig for Victory” campaign, which led to the creation of over one million new allotments in its first year alone.

Beyond home gardening, the initiative was a community effort. The Women’s Institute played a crucial role by establishing Fruit Preservation Centres to produce jams and canned goods, ensuring that no homegrown produce went to waste.

The photograph depicts school children growing their own food in the Dig for Victory Campaign (Newhey Council School Photographs).
