😎The short answer is: neither group typically needs supplemental water.

💛Breast feeding babies

Breast milk is approximately 87–88% water and dynamically adjusts to meet a baby’s hydration needs. During hot weather, the body naturally signals increased feeding frequency, and the composition of breast milk shifts, early feeds in a nursing session are more watery, providing extra hydration. For babies under 6 months, offering water is unnecessary and can be detrimental to feeding:
It can displace calorie and nutrient-rich milk, risking weight loss and nutritional deficiency
It can suppress hunger cues, reducing feeding frequency and potentially lowering milk supply.

The guidance from the WHO and most major health bodies is clear: exclusively breastfed infants under 6 months need no water, even in hot climates.

💛Formula fed babies

Standard prepared formula is also largely water-based and meets hydration needs when prepared correctly. The same under-6-months rule applies, supplemental water is unnecessary and carries the same risks. One important caveat: formula must be prepared at the correct concentration. Diluting formula to stretch it is dangerous and does not safely substitute for water.

💛6 months plus

Once solids are introduced, small sips of water with meals become appropriate for both breastfed and formula-fed babies not as a hydration necessity, but to support the transition to solid foods and good habits. Even then, milk (breast or formula) remains the primary hydration source through the first year.

🌞The bottom line

Hot weather calls for more frequent feeds, not supplemental water. Trust the feed, breast milk and correctly prepared formula are remarkably complete sources of both nutrition and hydration for babies under 6 months. After 6 months, small amounts of water alongside solids are fine, but milk remains central. When in doubt always consult a professional
