Your lower back doesn't work alone.

Neither do your hips.

Or your pelvis.

Or your legs.

Every time you walk, bend, get out of a chair or climb the stairs, different parts of your body have to work together.

And bodies are remarkably good at adapting.

If one area isn't moving particularly comfortably, another area may change how it moves to compensate.

That's one reason an assessment shouldn't begin and end with:

“Show me where it hurts.”

Where you're feeling the discomfort is important.

But understanding how the rest of you is moving can be important too.

That's why osteopathy takes a whole-person approach rather than treating the body as a collection of completely separate parts.

Got a problem that keeps returning?

Let's take a proper look at it.

Your body shouldn't need a warm-up just to get out of bed.

You know the routine.

Feet on the floor.

Stand up.

A few careful steps.

Maybe straighten yourself out slowly.

And five or ten minutes later, things start feeling a little more normal.

It's easy to dismiss that as “just getting older.”

But morning stiffness can have many different causes, and if it's becoming a regular part of your day, it's worth paying attention to — particularly if it's getting worse or changing how you move.

At Romsey Osteopathy, we take the time to understand what's happening, how you're moving and what may be contributing to the problem.

If every morning has started with the same little routine, perhaps it's time to get it looked at.

Nobody comes to see an osteopath because they dream of having better hip mobility.

They want to walk the dog.

Get back on the golf course.

Spend an afternoon in the garden.

Play with the grandchildren.

Go for a run.

Sleep comfortably.

Or simply get out of the car without thinking about it.

That's the bit that actually matters.

Improving how your body feels and moves isn't really about collecting extra degrees of movement.

It's about what that movement allows you to do.

The goal isn't to make your body impressive.

It's to stop your body getting in the way of your life.

If there's something you've quietly stopped doing because of pain or stiffness, give us a call.

Where it hurts and where the problem started aren't necessarily the same place.

Your neck, shoulders, upper back and spine don't work independently of each other.

They move together.

And when one area isn't moving particularly well, another area can sometimes end up doing more of the work.

Eventually, the place doing the extra work may be the place that starts complaining.

That's why pointing at the painful bit only tells us part of the story.

A proper assessment looks at how your body is moving together and what may be contributing to the problem.

So if that neck or shoulder problem keeps returning, perhaps it's worth looking beyond the obvious.

Your body is very good at finding ways around a problem.

That's useful.

Until you realise you've been doing it for six months.

You stop turning your head quite as far when reversing.

You always carry the shopping on the same side.

You avoid sleeping on one shoulder.

You take the stairs slightly differently.

You don't necessarily think of yourself as being in pain.

You've just... adjusted.

We see this surprisingly often.

The body finds another way to do something and, after a while, that new way simply becomes normal.

But if you've changed how you move because something doesn't feel right, it's worth asking why.

At Romsey Osteopathy, we look at how your body is moving as a whole — not simply the area that's complaining.

A good weekend isn’t very exciting on paper.

Walk the dog.

Mow the lawn.

Pop into town.

Play nine holes.

Mess about in the garden.

Pick the grandchildren up without having to think about whether you should.

And that’s sort of the point.

Most people who come to see an osteopath aren’t trying to become Olympic athletes. They just want their body to stop interfering with ordinary life.

Because when something hurts for long enough, the things you stop doing first are often the little things.

If stiffness or discomfort has been making your world a bit smaller lately, it may be worth doing something about it.

Our goal is to help you get back to doing more of the things you actually enjoy.

Two people can walk in with what sounds like exactly the same problem.

“My shoulder hurts.”

But one person spends their weekends gardening. Another sits at a desk all week. One noticed it after playing tennis. Another can’t remember when it started.

That’s why an appointment shouldn’t just be “shoulder hurts → treat shoulder.”

The interesting part is working out what’s actually going on.

How does the shoulder move? What’s happening through the neck and upper back? When does it hurt? When doesn’t it? What has changed?

Steve has spent his working life understanding the human body, and that experience matters when you’re trying to piece those clues together.

Your first appointment allows up to 60 minutes for an assessment and treatment, so there’s time to properly look at the problem rather than rush through it.

First appointment: consultation & treatment ONLY £60.

There’s a point where you stop calling it a bad back and start calling it “my bad back.”

That little word *my* says quite a lot.

You know which chair sets it off. You’ve worked out the safest way to get out of the car. You automatically choose the other hand for the heavy shopping bag. Maybe you’ve even stopped doing something you used to enjoy because *“my back doesn’t like that anymore.”*

And slowly, without really noticing, you’ve built a routine around it.

That doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something seriously wrong. But if an ache, stiffness or restriction has been hanging around long enough to change the way you live, it might be worth finding out why.

At Romsey Osteopathy, we look beyond the bit that hurts and at how your body is moving as a whole.

If you’ve been putting it off, give us a call and let’s see if we can help.

Walking further?

Playing with the grandchildren?

Golf?

Running?

Gardening?

Sleeping properly?

Getting through a day at work without constantly thinking about your neck?

That's actually a much more useful question than simply asking:

"Where does it hurt?"

Because getting someone out of pain is important.

But the real goal is getting them back to their life.

And everybody's answer to that looks slightly different.

That's why we don't believe in treating people like a collection of symptoms.

If something has been stopping you doing what you enjoy, don't just accept it as the new normal. Book an appointment and let's see if we can help you get back to it.

There's a strange British habit of being quite proud of ignoring pain.

"It's been like that for months."

"I just get on with it."

"It's not bad enough to bother anyone with."

Meanwhile, you're avoiding certain movements, sleeping differently and thinking twice before doing things you wouldn't have given a second thought to before.

That's not really "getting on with it."

That's organising your life around it.

You don't need to wait until something becomes unbearable before asking whether anything can be done.

If you've been saying "I'll get it looked at eventually", make eventually this week. Give us a call and book an appointment.
