NEW PODCAST EPISODE
YOU'RE NOT BROKEN:A DEPATHOLOGISED PATH THROUGH ADDICTION RECOVERY

Busy weekend of training ahead, so this weeks episode is a little early.

One of the most powerful shifts a clinician can make is moving away from a diagnostic, deficit-focused lens and towards something more curious and compassionate. Rather than asking what is wrong with this person, we begin asking what happened to this person — and, crucially, how have they managed to endure it? This reframing is not about minimising the seriousness of addictive behaviour; it is about honouring the human being behind the behaviour.

The Compulsion to Close:Who Really Wins the Last Word?

We chase the final line in arguments as though it were the finish line. But the psychology of needing to be last — and loudest — reveals something far more complicated than victory.

The person who really wins the last word is the one who understands that they do not need it. Not because they have given up, or been defeated, or swallowed something that will poison them later — but because they have become secure enough in themselves to let the conversation end without their name on the final sentence.

That kind of silence is not concession. It is, quietly, the most powerful thing anyone can choose to say.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE
The Myth of the “Strong” Person: What Resilience Actually Looks Like

We’ve built a culture that celebrates people who don’t crack, but what if that’s the wrong thing to celebrate entirely?

Think about the last time someone called you strong. Chances are, it wasn’t because you openly wept, asked for help, or admitted you were barely holding things together. It was probably because you kept going. Because you showed up anyway. Because, from the outside, you looked fine.

This is the myth of the strong person — a cultural archetype so deeply embedded that most of us don’t even question it. The strong person doesn’t complain. They carry the weight without letting it show. They are the rock, the anchor, the one others lean on.

It’s a seductive idea. Clean, aspirational and almost entirely false.
The version of resilience we’ve inherited from popular culture, motivational posters, and even well-meaning parenting isn’t really resilience at all. It’s endurance dressed up in armour. It’s the capacity to suppress — to continue functioning while never actually processing what’s happening beneath the surface, and for a very long time, we’ve confused the two.

Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) is a body-based therapeutic approach developed by Frank Corrigan that works directly with the brain's subcortical survival systems — the parts of us that respond to threat before conscious thought even kicks in.
Unlike talk therapies that engage the thinking mind, DBR focuses on orienting reflexes: the instinctive movements your eyes, head, and body make when scanning for safety or danger. In trauma, these reflexes can become frozen or dysregulated, leaving the nervous system stuck in loops of fear, collapse, or hypervigilance.
In a DBR session, a therapist gently guides attention toward subtle internal sensations — the impulse to turn the head, a flicker of eye movement, a shift in where attention lands in space. By slowing down and completing these micro-movements, the brain's deep structures begin to update their threat assessment. The body gets the message: it's over, you're safe now.
What makes DBR distinct is its respect for the intelligence already wired into us. It doesn't override survival responses — it works with them, helping the brain organically reorganise around present-moment reality rather than past danger.
For many people, it unlocks healing where words simply couldn't reach.
